IT’S OUT!!! The Colors That Haunt Us is officially a real book that people can buy and read and have opinions about. And, because apparently one major life event at a time wasn’t enough, today is also my birthday. Happy book birthday to both of us. #TheColorsThatHaunt #BookSky #QueerBooks

#OctoberWorldbuilders I want readers to finish Gilded Essence feeling a little angry, a little hopeful, and maybe questioning some things. A lot of the story is about what happens when a society turns survival itself into something people have to earn, and how easy it is to accept a cruel...

#OctoberWorldbuilders, how you feeling? Or rather, how do you want your readers to feel after they've finished your story? Are you trying to get them to feel a certain way? To think about a certain topic or theme? Or do you just want to entertain them?

#QueerPrompts "The Horror and the Wild" - The Amazing Devil This is pretty close to how I want my wip to feel: wonder and danger tangled together, growing dread, desperation, grief, and the sense that everything is spiraling into something much bigger than Rehn expected.

#QueerPrompts October 27: Media (GIF, song, image, emojis, etc.) of what emotions you expect/want readers to feel

#LGBTQWriteAThon Rehn would absolutely love the spooky-season excuse to tell ghost stories around a fire. Xe would insist xe doesn't scare easily, spend half the night trying to make everyone else jump, and then get personally offended when someone manages to startle xir.

#LGBTQWriteAThon October 27: Today's question is brought to you by @spookyxpickle.bsky.social. Be sure to check out their Book Bazaar project! What is your or your character's favorite spooky season pastime? @queerwriters.bsky.social @rebeccafrostwrites.com #queerwriters #lgbtqwriters

#LitHodgePodge My current wip has a messy version of found family. Rehn’s original adventuring party starts as a team built around a shared mission, but those bonds become much more personal. Thara is xir anchor, Kashir is an old friend, Lanya is the eager newcomer everyone gradually starts...

looking out for, and Vael... well. Vael is why found family sometimes comes with betrayal trauma. After everything falls apart, Rehn has to relearn what it means to trust people, accept help, and build connections that aren’t based on prophecy, duty, or survival.

#AwesomeCharacters For me, “love to hate” comes down to whether the character is compelling to watch. They can be cruel, selfish, hypocritical, even completely unsympathetic, but I still want personality, conviction, competence, or enough audacity that every scene with them has energy. A...

Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters Today feels like a technical question day! What separates a character you love to hate, from one you just hate? A villain you may not feel sympathy for, but enjoy nonetheless? Which do you like to write? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

character I *just* hate usually feels mean without being interesting. Mark is probably my clearest example. I have very little sympathy for him, but his certainty that he’s right makes him incredibly fun to write. I definitely prefer writing villains I love to hate.

#FirstDraftFall Mercy is heading toward a bittersweet ending. Madison can gain freedom and a future beyond Providence, but there is too much history, grief, and damage for victory to feel clean. The Town of Alderwick is much harder to label. I’d call it unsettling rather than purely happy or...

sad. Even if people uncover the truth, knowing what Alderwick is may not mean they can escape it. Gilded Essence is also bittersweet. Rehn can help change the world and break something harmful, but that kind of change comes with loss. Xe will not end the story as the same person who began it.

#LGBTQWriteAThon I’m keeping my goals pretty light this week! I’ve got a hockey game tomorrow and Halloween this weekend, so the main goal is to write when I feel like it, poke at whatever project has my attention, and not stress about hitting any particular numbers.

#LGBTQWriteAThon October 26: Goals day! What are your goals this week? Big or small, share and cheer on others for the week to come! @queerwriters.bsky.social @rebeccafrostwrites.com #queerwriters #writingcommunity #lgbtqwriters

#LitHodgePodge Rehn will lie when the truth gives someone else leverage over xir. Xe’ll hide how badly xe is hurt, how little magic xe has left, what xe’s afraid of, or how much a situation is getting to xir. Rehn is much more comfortable letting people believe xe is reckless and unbothered...

#FirstDraftFall Mercy: Madison stands to lose her life, Ruth, and any future she might have had outside Providence's rules. What she could gain is much bigger than survival: freedom, truth, and the chance to break a system that has consumed Hosts for generations. The Town of Alderwick: The...

stakes start small and personal, then widen. Residents risk losing their sense of reality, their history, and even their ability to trust their own memories. What they might gain is the truth about Alderwick, assuming the town lets them keep it. Gilded Essence: Rehn begins wanting purpose,...

recognition, and the chance to change things. Instead, xe risks losing xir magic, xir friends, xir body, and eventually xir faith in the systems that shaped xir whole life. What xe gains is the chance to understand what the world has been hiding and decide what to do with that truth.

#WIPSnips Being trapped underground is bad enough. Being trapped beneath a prison, after the way back has collapsed, in a part of the mountain no one even knows exists? Veyr is having a particularly terrible day.

Welcome to spooky week for #WIPSnips! The #WIPSnips word for October 26th is "claustrophobia" Remember, use synonyms, variations or ✨vibes✨ if you don't have the word! #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Ace Week means a lot to me personally because I’m asexual and aromantic. Those identities shape how I move through the world, how I think about relationships, and the kinds of stories I want to see more of. #AceWeek #Asexuality #Aromantic #AroAce #QueerAuthors

I want ace characters to get the same range everyone else does: messy, joyful, frightened, selfish, tender, heroic, terrible, romantic, aromantic, complicated, ordinary. We deserve stories where being ace is part of a life, not the entire explanation for it.

#OctoberWorldbuilders Faith in Gilded Essence has a very polished, ceremonial feel: domed halls, carved pillars, dark stone, gold accents, quiet voices, and rituals designed to make magic feel sacred. Oracles occupy an especially important place. Prophecy is treated with reverence, so their...

Good morning, #OctoberWorldbuilders! What sort of aesthetics or vibes do you associate with faith/religions in your setting? What do churches, priests, or rituals look like? What sounds, sights, smells, feelings, etc. are associated with them? Were you inspired by any real faiths in creating yours?

spaces are meant to inspire awe and make their words feel unquestionable. That creates a fun tension because magic is simultaneously spiritual, economic, and political. Something can be presented as divine while still being used to keep people obedient. There isn’t a one-to-one inspiration from...

#QueerPrompts Being ace myself, I’ve collected quite a few ace-spectrum characters. Rehn, Owen, Declan, Sarah, Margaret, Kai, Elanir, Advsended, Aster, and Auralis. Ace, aroace, gay ace, and plenty of different lives, genres, and relationships.

#QueerPrompts October 25: Asexual Awareness Week Begins & International Artist Day: Ace rep or art share

#AwesomeCharacters I get Vael. Which is awful because he’d be perfectly pleasant. He’d help with my bag, make charming conversation, probably offer me the window seat, and by hour six I’d realize he’d learned everything about me while revealing absolutely nothing useful about himself.

Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters Hypothetical day! You have just settled in to your seat for a 12 hour flight when the person assigned to the seat next to you arrives. It is one of your antagonists. Who is your seatmate, and how bad is this? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

#LitHodgePodge When drafting reveals something that genuinely works better than your outline, how much do you let it change before you stop and rework the plan? I tend to update the outline so the ripple effects stay intentional, but I’m curious how other writers balance discovery with structure.

#OCtoberWorldbuilders Dark ↔ Cozy: 90% Dark, but with pockets of warmth and community. Fantasy ↔ Sci-fi: 95% fantasy. Romance ↔ Nonromantic: 80% nonromantic. Rehn is aroace, and the story’s emotional core is much more about friendship, loyalty, betrayal, survival, and finding a place to belong.

#OctoberWorldbuilders, good morning friends! This one is broad and open-ended, and you can use your own words to describe it, not just what I've suggested: What is the overall vibe of your work? Where would it be on a dark-cozy scale? Or a fantasy-scifi scale? Or romance-nonromantic scale?

#TheColorsThatHaunt #QueerPrompts Clara: 3/10 normally, 7/10 once obsession takes the wheel. Suzette: 4/10. Technically a ghost, but mostly she’s trying to warn you. Rosenfeld Manor: 11/10. Absolutely the scariest character, and yes, I’m counting the house.

#QueerPrompts October 24: Rate your character(s)' scariness level

#LGBTQWriteAThon This week was productive, just not necessarily in the way I planned. I bounced between projects, did some work on Gilded Essence, and kept poking at Mercy and my newsletter serial. So did I accomplish my exact goals? Maybe not. Did I make progress anyway? Absolutely.

#LGBTQWriteAThon October 24: Check in day! How was your week? Did you accomplish your goals? @rebeccafrostwrites.com #queerwriters #writingcommunity #lgbtqwriters

#OctoberWorldbuilders Kashra is all sun-warmed stone, patched walls, narrow streets, shaded courtyards, salvaged materials, and buildings that look like they have been repaired a hundred times and will be repaired a hundred more. Food is simple and communal, made from what can be grown, traded,...

#OctoberWorldbuilders, good morning! What are the aesthetics of a town/city/location in your world? What's the architecture, food, culture, etc. like in that place? And would you visit it if you had a chance?

or preserved. People share skills, resources, stories, and work because the town exists through mutual reliance. The whole place feels worn-in rather than polished. Practical, stubborn, a little improvised, and alive. Would I visit? Absolutely. Would I survive the trip there? Different question.

#QueerPrompts For spooky reading recs, some of my highest-rated horror reads: The Spirit Bares Its Teeth - Andrew Joseph White All the Hearts You Eat - Hailey Piper The Otherwoods - Justine Pucella Winans Bury Your Gays - Chuck Tingle Apparently my taste is queer horror + suffering. Who knew?

#QueerPrompts October 23: Free Friday or spooky reading recs

#LitHodgePodge For my most recent WIP, I desperately want Essara vial necklaces. Little glass vials made to look like they’re holding stored magic, maybe with glow-in-the-dark or shifting pigment inside. In-world they’re used to store magic for things like wages, rent, and taxes, so carrying...

#LGBTQWriteAThon Fira is haunted by the time they were young, mediated their first big dispute, got the agreement stamped, and walked out feeling proud of themself. They genuinely thought, "Yes. Paperwork has solved this problem forever." Older Fira would like everyone to stop bringing this up.

Times. Lantern Night, town meetings, local news, and ordinary community life all look normal. The inciting incident is less one dramatic event and more the first crack in that normalcy, when the town’s strange traditions and impossible gaps in memory start becoming harder to ignore. ...

Gilded Essence: Rehn is identified as the "chosen one" from a prophecy and sent after the Echo Core, an artifact the Council claims could save the world. Xe accepts because it looks like the chance to finally become someone important. Naturally, the prophecy is not telling the whole truth.

#FirstDraftFall My goals for the next week: Flesh out Mercy's plot and character arcs. Map out Alderwick's first few issues and the clues hidden in them. Review my Gilded Essence outline and plan changing scenes. Basically, more planning so future me has fewer problems. 😂

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Q5: What steps can you take in the next week to prepare for #FirstDraftFall? #WeeknightWriters

#FirstDraftFall Mercy: I'm still working out how to reveal the truth behind the town's rituals. Alderwick: I'm figuring out how to pace the horror and plant clues across newspaper issues. Gilded Essence is already drafted technically, but editing keeps giving me reasons to change things.
