After the creation of the DPR, Olena and her daughter moved to Odesa to escape repression. Two years later, her mother had a stroke, so Olena began to return to care for her. Eventually, the russians kidnapped Olena and later sentenced her to 13 years in prison due to her clear pro-Ukrainian stance.
