If I had a time machine and could only do petty things, I’d go back in time to the Starlight Express workshops and go “have ANY of you considered why steam engines were ACTUALLY hated?“ and save it from marrying the absolute stupidest, most justified fantasy racism concept known to man

I have no idea why anyone thought that a machine known for being “black and dirty”, technologically primitive, genuinely dangerous, physically inferior, and banned from NYC for legitimate safety reasons was a good standin for ANY human demographic because holy shit that’s justified hate

And on top of that, a widespread symbol of white imperialism and the Bad Old Days of industrial capitalism. Not to mention that it even chose to erase the existence of steam preservation and sanitize them into oblivion, which is ragebait for that sphere.

It’s fucking painful that so much physical effort and genuinely inspired artistic choices are wasted on a narrative that’s fundamentally blatantly stupid and regressive on every level. Even moreso when people DEFEND it because uwu it’s a racism metaphor and not really about trains

Starlight Express is dangerously close to being the train equivalent of Springtime for Hitler. Making your emotional core NEOLIBERALISM is absolutely diabolical with trains specifically. Celebrating Project 2025’s energy politics (or a stupid gadgetbahn) is also hilariously awful

I am so close to making a Toon critter equivalent of Al Perlman who solely exists to brutally murder twee little cartoon choo choos. I have a rapidly growing hatred for cute cliche steam engines in media for erasing other historic trains and ignoring how they actually suck.

His joke is either that he is a completely reasonable railroader in an unreasonable universe, three more choo choos replace each one he obliterates, or that he’s actually fine with accurately shitty steam engines because they’re funny. Or he replaces them with equally shitty NEW trains

As a Toon actor, he used to play Hitler and is physically incapable of dropping the mannerisms because it’s too funny when he’s literally just running the trains on time. Or screaming at someone not to turn that valve at a chemical plant or they’ll gas everyone.

An interesting Mummer vs fursuiter thing is TOTALLY different species mix. Bugs, fish, reptile, and amphibians are way more common and non-pet small mammals are nearly nonexistant. There’s some dogs but (mostly big) cats are more common. Both have a lot of dragons and birds

Bird species are totally different (minus parrots, which are fairly popular with both) you see waaay more fowl Mummer suits for obvious reasons, but they’re rare as fursuits. You get way more overall species diversity with the former vs hoardes of generic canines

There’s also decades of people trying to be edgy because “every theme has been done already!” while the majority of furries are a-okay with being blue dog or just a fox Being specifically aimed at looking good from 10+ feet away in a parade and wanting RAINBOWS is also a HUGE difference

I can’t believe I found a photo of a fursuit in the Mummer’s parade in the 2000s but lmao of course it’s Acid Horse by the confederate flag suit guy (Magnus Diridian). So unsurprising I had to ugly laugh

Furries and Mummers having swapped reputations would be hilarious. “All fursuits are Victorian-style, clown-themed, or cosplays of racist early cartoons” vs “ plumbers in 50 pounds of sequins, scratchy interfacing, metal, feathers, and/or cardboard make you awooga because you’re a bird inside”

Furries either rule the radio instead of internet, or somehow every radio host (oh no most of them are shitty conservatives) is an open furry drawn in by the anonymity and capitalism. IT guys are hush hush about being Mummers because people will get the wrong political impression (real tbh)

one of the C-list hair metal guys wins the dance comp every year because he has the coolest fursuit and the crowd fucking loves it. Serious dancers hate it. Thus reinventing the Fancy category because yeah, a lot of people just want to see the costumes bounce around

There are bizarre, elaborate multi-person fursuits akin to eldritch pantomime horses. They are an art form basically lost to time since most makers died without passing it on because furries were a secret society thing until recently and you had to know a guy or be born into it

Fancy Mummer documentary filmed like Animal Planet talking about rare birds at a lek ft insinuating they think it’s hot Fursuit parades that go on all day. Femboy foxes exist because skirts mean you can piss anywhere (bonus for being in character). hairy legs count as NOT poodling

Somehow fursuit parades are a century+ long proud (but messy) tradition with communal mascot-style suits. People largely care about the marching bands Mummer conventions become aggressively capitalist and individualist. String bands are somehow an afterthought vs dance comps

Suspiciously wealthy furries are mostly C-list hair metal guys who can have all the leather and owo on display and be seen as totally family friendly because rock n roll! String bands now perform for free again because they’re all tech guys who can blow 2k a year. Little changes for outsiders tbh

People who make characters of fictional species like sergals or protogens while ignoring the lore for them is baffling to me, that’s the point where I just file the serial numbers off. Especially if I actively don’t like the lore.

It’s part of why I don’t make species and if someone really wants to knockoff a character of mine, sure. I’d be way too excommunication happy if you tried to use my names or universes. Species tend to get really cookie cutter anyways and I don’t care to encourage that.

Firmly support knocking off universes specifically to ditch problematic lore, shoutout to Starlight Express knockoffs based on actual local transit politics. There are supposedly multiple. Or the endless Gene Simmons knockoffs who make the Demon something actually interesting

I’m glad you can finally pull the death of the artist card on Victor Willis, he wrote so many great but absurd Village People deep cuts like Sodom and Gomorrah. The fact he was completely genuine about these ridiculous gay double entendre songs is hilarious

I might need to revisit my powerpoint about just HOW spectacularly bad Starlight Express’s train politics are. To the point it’s not even stupid anymore, it’s a tragedy and sort of Train Cabaret but with neoliberalism and/or idiotic industrial politics

They are so bad it’s educational to be a passionate hater. There is so much to pick apart and hate on. The fanbase falls for so much conservative garbage because they refuse to skim wikipedia when it comes to real trains, while still insisting they’re being progressive

Asterisk currently isn’t wearable because I ripped the ears off during a mental breakdown (they’re fixable, just need more pill bottles the right size) I made some really dumb “refurb” decisions during it in general but fortunately most are fixable

I’ve always had a distinct art style, for better and worse. It’s started to feel limiting and inescapable. But also something I have little will to fight since I only really care about drawing character designs

Not knowing if anything is coming after Asterisk is heartbreaking. I guess commissioning is a possibility in the far future, but every personal project falling apart recently has been :/ I really prefer to make my own “face” in the furry sphere and I‘d swallow my pride just getting a base

Bessemer is only becoming more of a boondoggle, I don’t like how the wings are coming out at all and they’re incredibly heavy Me vs high school me feels like a “why can’t we build a subway AT ALL we did it so easily in the past”

It’s been a depressing realization that genuinely only being a furry for the art and seeing my worth as only what I can make becomes a dead end when art is such a dead zone like right now and I can’t bring my vision to life anymore

Being unemployed has confirmed that freelance artist would be my nightmare job, I neeeed art to be an escape, not something to be escaped from I also need to be out of the house I hate being at home this long
