Increasingly, I'm seeing MATs expecting every student in a year group to do exactly the same prescribed work on the same date across all schools. Actually teaching a class (using professional teaching skills as a subject expert to plan lessons) is now frowned upon. Your thoughts?

Should we conform our use of geometric vocabulary to Euclid rather than persisting with the inconsistent semi-inclusive ahistorical mash up we use now? I mean... **look at "trapeziums" whatever they are supposed to be** #maths #geometry #uk

NOT your usual free maths lesson resources: laws of indices - product and quotient laws (multiply and divide indices). Fully atomised, misconceptioned, variation theory, cogsci, deliberate practice, and teaching guide for the teach aiming for 100%. Did I mention free? www.tes.com/teaching-res...

Who wants a Maths Tarsia? I'd like to create some *Free Tarsias* for the maths teaching community. What topic would you me to make? Also let me know if you prefer hexagonal (large) or triangular (smaller) forms? #maths #mathsteacher

Things I hate as a teacher: #1 - people coming into my room saying "can I borrow X for a minute?" Actually no X is in this room because he or she needs to learn this maths, please wait for them outside at the end of the lesson and stop interupting me. But I'm not allowed to say that. #MathsToday

Our Laws of Indices lessons are fully prepared, starting with atomisation, leading to modelling, followed by expansion, interleaved practice, and exam style questions. We test for and explain misconceptions, and build deliberately robust schema. Success starts here: www.tes.com/teaching-res...

At the start of a new year, ask your new classes how they're feeling about #MathsToday. It's simple, but I find it's powerful, particularly for those prone to Maths Anxiety. Free resource... if you try it let me know how it went? www.tes.com/teaching-res...

How will your school respond to iron deficiency this year? If you're a maths teacher in an area of deprivation it is practically certain that multiple people in your classes will be unable to concentrate on maths because of it. #edusky #mathschat

If your response to the Athena scandal is to chalk it up as one failed trust, you need to think again. Athena happened because the MAT became unaccountable to both parents and teachers. In the end, the only way they could change it was to destroy it. All schools need boards of governors again.

Athena? If neither parents nor teachers have power to shape policy at a school, there is a serious governance problem. Major stakeholders should not be forced to campaign and ultimately destroy an organisation just to effect change. Stakeholders should be those making school policy, not fighting it.

We need parents, teachers, and communities back in the driving seat in our schools. Not 'advisory groups' or such rubbish. The MAT needs to propose: stakeholders need to decide. Why should a distant CEO whose never met your kids or their teachers decide your school policy? #deacademise

Education reform priorities: 1) Restore and fully re-empower school governors < URGENT 2) Put an Ofsted rep on every governing body, to provide long term guidance not one off judgement 3) Cap staff:student ratios to 16 (i.e. teacher + TA for 32 students)

Today, the law actually prohibits both parents and teachers from being trustees of MATs. "Local governing bodies" are merely advisory, with no actual power. This governance failure is ultimately what is leading to the imminent collapse of Athena Learning Trust: all stakeholders are disenfranchised.

End of term special: 2026 World Algebra Cup (four fun algebra knock-out style worksheets) at just £2. Ideal for year 9s and 10s. Good for year 8 too, although one sheet has equations of the form a/(b+x)=c which might prove tricky, class dependent of course. #maths #endofterm #mathsparty

I've made this with year 8, first lesson back, in mind. They will turn up with a half forgotten algebra schema, probably rife with misconceptions. This poster and the accompanying lesson aims to address the things that cause them to stumble before we go any further.

Which do you believe is best? Lesson 1: Circumference and Area of Circles; Lesson 2: Circumference and Area of Circles - interleaved practice with Q variations. OR: Lesson 1: Circumference of Circles - including Q variations; Lesson 2: Area of Circles - including Q variations. #mathschat
