Today I'm laid off my tool developer job for economical reasons, saying goodbye after five years to a highly dysfunctional company who did not delivered a single profitable game in years, who's now running out of Tencent money, and might die in November.

I'm not obsessed about career, but It stings that this is the end of mine. Video game industry is at its worst, already ~8.6k people laid off this year, and we're just in July ... Finding a job in this overcrowded market with my peculiarities will be near impossible.

I wish I could continue in this industry, for all the problems it has, it is fascinating, but like many people right now, I know I might have to look somewhere else, and since the tech industry is not insanely better rn, it makes hard to project into anything...

Despite a very rough start, high toxicity from the board and some part of management, it was the best workplace I've ever had: lots of open minded people I shared views with, strong union fighting for us, passionate and artsy people, patient users, it felt good to work here.

Being AuDHD, the full remote allowed me for the first time in my life to work without feeling like shit constantly... Now years after the COVID crisis, most companies went back on this, I don't know if I'll ever find a job like this again.

Hey, if you like sci-fi noir I can highly recommend Mars Express! The amount of worldbuilding and attention to detail it gets across every minute is spellbinding. (and most importantly it's about robots but not a tired "robots as slaves" allegory. More going on than that.)
