The Kremlin is weaponising Western companies that remain in Russia—seizing their assets and turning them into hostages to block new sanctions. Metro is the latest example. The continued presence of EU firms in Russia has gifted Moscow a leverage point to pressure governments and undermine EU unity.

“The fact that Philips is still doing business in Skolkovo is unacceptable,” says Dutch MP Hanneke van der Werf. “Skolkovo is linked to Russia’s war industry. This means the argument of caring for Russian citizens no longer holds. Medical equipment should be included in the next sanctions package.”
