Ok here's my computer storage medium ranking. Unordered, but each storage medium will have a teir. If it isn't mentioned, i havent used it personally. Completely objective truth and no hot takes. Lets go to the ranking!

Ferrite core memory - C teir I used this memory at vcf midwest. Someone was selling core memory kits. Very cool and good technology, especially for the era. If it were cheaper to make i think it would be fun to have more ferrite core in hobbyist computers.

Blu ray AND Mdiscs - B tier bc its not as widely adopted enough to see its full potential In a perfect world we'd have mini blue ray/mdiscs with a cute little caddy but we dont live in the fun tech world yet

PAPER - S TEIR not paper tape. I mean computer code printed on the page. Hear me out!! There are a few games i made that i lost over the years that were only recovered because I had printed out the source code and put it into a random binder. Paper stored right can last a really long time!

For smaller bits of software its nice. I know im not the only one of yall that collects computer books. Some of this stuff would have never gotten distrubuted had it not been printed in a book or magazine. type ins also encourage the user to understand how the software works, and thats a positive

Cassette tape storage - C teir. Not random acces, barely any capacity and slow as molasses but they still make tapes, and are super easy to archive. They last a good long time too. I see why they got replaced once floppies got good. I respect it though. If it wasnt so slow it would be higher.

CDs + DVDs - A teir. The price of the discs makes up for the shortcomings tbh. They always felt flimsy and a little more delicate than microfloppies. Its a shame computers don't come with optical storage anymore. Cheap removable storage is more important than ever, for personal and distrubution.

Hard Disk Drives - S TEIR !!!! Cheap. Reliable. Computer storage. This is what its about honestly. Take care of them and they'll take care of you.

We need cheap removable magnetic storage again. That's my political statement here. Tech been there. Zip died when i was an infant dont ask me bout zip. But we should bring back the user experience floppies provided.

Flash drives just be dangling off the side of the computer looking a mess. Floppies slide in and dissapear into the machine. Out of sight but forever on your mind. Sub one dollar 20 gigabyte DURABLE magnetic disk drive .. built into every computer.. it would be beautiful...

Flash Memory - B teir. Not bad. On the storage size capacity they are good. Can be very helpful. I don't like that the charge has to be kept tho. That's a little scary. I wish the user experience was a bit better as well. You'll see what i mean in the next one.

3.5 inch floppies - B TEIR Perfect size. Perfect shape. Computers chirp happily when they're being used. All is good in the world. Tbh it sucks that we abandoned cheap magnetic storage. Microfloppies are just perfect form, and when every computer has a drive, it all Just Works.

SSDs - D teir. I know these are all the rage but i ignorantly bought a cheap unlabeled one, realized how powerful it was, moved all my important stuff to it, and lost all of it in like 2 years due to a drive failure. No other medium has done me like this so im a hater. #sorrynotsorry

5.25 inch floppies - F teir. Never encountered a 5 inch drive that worked right. The disks are cute and big and nice but tbh i hate dealing with them lowkey. I feel like these are so easy to fuck up its just not worth it. (Looking at my trs 80 model 4 + the pile of operating system disks i ruined)

guy who hangs out with newtypes but isn't actually a newtype but he doesnt realize it bc he's always high and his new age worldview aligns with theirs
