2mos ago, our heart dog Elliot left us. We were shattered. He was our sanctuary and our bliss for 15.5yrs. Shortly after, this skeleton of a dog showed up in my feed. Elliot had been a cruelty victim and maybe that’s why he loved the underdogs. I felt him nudge me, “Guys. Help him.” 1/3

So Dasher arrived, full of warmth and worry. We got right to work with all the things foster homes do to smooth new dogs back to joy. Play & more play, routine & hugs. He looked so much like Elliot, we could sorta imagine he was still here. A game that tricked our brains out of intense grief…

… and into purpose. Funny thing, as his emotional wounds healed, so did ours. Ppl thought we were gonna keep him, but there a nagging feeling that he belonged somewhere else. When his new family surfaced, everything just clicked into place. Thank you, Dasher. And thank you Elliott. #loveheals

Crazy Truth: Some of the very best dogs we see in our program wait the longest for homes. Not sure why! And they only get ‘better’ while they’re here. Chico. What you see here is what you get. Rescued July 2 (!!!) and just the bestest Good Boy. ❤️

A trade secret: We can’t let ourselves get too bonded w/ our fosters, even when some are hungry for MORE. That ‘professional distance’ is necessary but can be so hard! Chico was one dog who wanted a deeper connection with us. Ugh. On Sat he came to class with his brand new person (photo) 1/2

He nearly wiggled out of his skin when he saw us again. But this time, he seemed esp excited as if to say, “Hey! I have a human! I have a human! And she holds me and loves me tells me I’m perfect!” “We know Chico. We know! ❤️ Thank you for hanging in there w/ the long wait, buddy. You did SO good.”

Big adrenalin crash after a frantic search for an affordable* ER spay for this much loved girl. An unplanned pregnancy while she was with her owner’s petsitter (!!) And surprise. Not only did she hide it, exam shows she's days away from giving birth. WUT?Dozens of phone calls & text messages… 1/2

HUGE thanks to all the vets who responded to the bat signal and juggled their calendar to fit her in soonest. And to the vet who said 'Yes! Tomorrow!' - You're a modern day hero. All fingers crossed for no overnight surprises. #sodamnclose #stressful #wishherluck

She made it! Big exhale with a deep bow to her owner who asked for help and then found an early morning ride alllll the way to Napa to meet her appt. Contemporary animal care challenges are no joke!

A cluster of crisis & cruelty. This is infuriating, but we’re glad it’s getting coverage. "Unless people do take the initiative [and get the pets out], those animals will starve to death in those backyards or those homes," said Yvette Berke, outreach manager for Cats at the Studios.

aol.comICE raids are leaving some L.A. cats and dogs homelessChuco, a pit bull, was dropped at a shelter after his owner was deported last month. Many other dogs and cats in L.A. are facing similar circumstances as their caretakers vanish or flee.

#justgothome When the ink’s still wet on the adoption contract and new family zaps fresh pix of their new love sprawled out blissing with toys, big smile and flashy bandana … It’s a next level happy dance for all of us. #instantYES 🎉 Congrats to Maggie!

🔥 We've been heartbroken to witness the injustice taking place in the US towards immigrant communities, especially here in CA. La Raza has contributed so much to supporting and building up our org that we literally wouldn't be who we are without them. They are us, We are them.

We encourage you to reach out to your neighbors to help them game plan for worse case scenarios. Help them know that you'll be there for their families and their pets. People who are peacefully protesting need protections too, including pet care if they're detained. Reach out. Be their comfort.

CA is strong and fire-disaster response experience has made us smarter and tougher. We will survive these times if we embrace community as we've already learned how to do.

Regardless of someone's technical legal status, ppl deserve to be treated with dignity as human beings, with due process in all* situations. In animal welfare, we preach humane care/treatment as core values in our approach to all challenges, even the most difficult challenges. That credo has ...

... allowed us to evolve our field beyond the horrible, inhumane policies & practices from yesteryear. Using fear to control will always be wrong. Now we're getting reports of shelters recv'ing animals who are left w/o care after Ice raids, and when targeted families lose their main bread winners.

Nat’l Rescue Dog Day. You know what to do … Show us who owns your ❤️. Owen doesn’t have a family who can brag about him yet, but he gets a post regardless. Next year, Owen! #adoptionrocks

New dog Owen’s eyes say it all. He winces a bit when we touch him - I’m sure you can guess what that means. We’ll shift that story with time & some focused TLC. He’s so gentle & kind & hopeful. Looking forward to seeing him exhale and realize that Life is good. You deserve the best, Owen.

Earth Day. So great to see 7 stressed shelter dogs exhale for a bit. We needed the downshift as much as they did. If you see a face in here that speaks to you, pls reach out to the shelter listed by their name, or post Qs here. We got a good feel for each during their visit & are happy to advise.

When your mom comes to pick you up from school and - Surprise! - that sweet puppy you met on Sunday is in the car waiting to climb into your lap again. #waytomakeamemory Have a great life, Maya and Elle (and family!) ❤️

Another new kid that’s getting settled in and ready for a family. 8mos old Tyson! Such a pleaser. That smile and those big warm eyes are knocking gonna elevate the happiness in his future home’s life. Can’t wait to see them finally connect. #adoptme

Yes there was another NFL player indicted for dog fighting (Oklahoma) but I’d rather look at a puppy than talk about that mess right now. #gowiththeflow This is Maya and she needs a home. ❤️

Friday vibes with adopted Pepper (was Yasu) and her new dude, Bucky. Pepper was a cruelty/neglect survivor, so these pix mean e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g to us. #goodkarma #loveheals

We Stand with Ukraine. March 2022. This painting - entitled 'Strong Dog' - was created for us by Alexander, a 16yo Ukrainian artist who managed to paint while his home town of Odesa was being bombed. We commissioned it as a way to support him & his family, but without any expectation of timing.

Who can work under so much pressure? He'll get it to us someday when he's found a window of time, or so we thought. We were floored when his father sent a digital image of Alexander's work within a day. How did he manage to steady his hand while listening to bombs of all things?

His father told us that he hadn't painted in a long time when he made this. It was a big deal - his very first commission, actually. We were incredibly honored to receive it. We think of Alexander, his family & all of Ukraine almost every single day. Especially today. Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦 ✊

According to research from UC San Diego & Harvard, the kindness you show others ripples out into the very fabric of humanity. It does. This IS resistance. Today, a woman is trying to help this dog. She knew the owner who beat him and now he’s sheltered, acting out & listed for euthanasia.

We share the story with a fav rescue colleague in her area. Can you help us help them - and quickly please? Yes, more yes. Deassa at Ripple Effect Animal Project. Made the calls, got him safe. Offered extra resources to make sure she has enough.

Kindness begets kindness. We may not see the ripple effects of this, but our hearts are set right today & that builds resilience, joy, traction. Kindness IS resistance to all the ugly out there. Let’s fuel up. Pls share in comments your small acts of kindness either recv’d or offered. Thank you ❤️

He’s been iffy w/ staff, BUT she went to see him & he softened right down to her. Her kindness, remembered. She wants to adopt him but can’t afford the fees. She found her way to us (how? I dunno) and her commitment to him was all we needed to see. ‘Yes’ of course we’ll help. Hang tight.

🔥 When owned pets are hungry, don’t forget to make sure their humans can eat too. When disaster victims need pet supplies, don’t forget that boosting their mental health will build resilience. #longgame A deep thx to Jimi, who gifted his guitar to an Eaton Fire survivor who lost it all.

We have a strong hunch that the 2 dogs, 2 cats in this family are going to benefit in a big way from seeing their human make music again. The village knows: We gotta prioritize human needs too, to achieve #mentalhealth for #petretention during impossible times. Do you feel me?

One of the biggest pieces to resisting impossible times is to find your joy to get you through. Congrats to Taylor & Thomas on finding Laverne. May she keep your hearts full & happy for years to come.

🍒Cherry-Eye-a-Bye-bye! It’s gratifying to see this kid enjoy the world thru his newly fixed eyes. He’s on track with healing and we’re ready to cut him loose to a new family. 4mos old, super well socialized & all the things. Doya need a puppeh? Email us about Marvin. contact @ badrap.org

When you’re on the run and a quick text response counts as bad ‘customer service.’ 😆 Twenty bucks this person is just looking for easy/free; not our typical struggling family-in-need. But darn them! - now I have a deep craving for pizza.

This AM has been ‘interesting.’ Running play sessions & scooping poo while phone counseling a very stressed Eaton Fire survivor, (more soon), just after locking down our personal credit reports due to a breach at the Treasury dept. 🔥 Wild times. Also: Rosa here is ready for her new home.
