@paulbernal.bsky.social typical, PH (who is complying with state AV) show state gov proof the state AV laws doing more harm and gov response is to threaten complying site (use VPN to access, blocked because of GDPR) bsky.app/profile/mike...

Louisiana's Gov says she will retaliate against Pornhub after the site showed the state's famous AV law isn't working. Pornhub has been complying with Louisiana's age-verification law since 2023. But 8 in 10 sites on Google are not. These people can not accept this is the wrong solution.

@paulbernal.bsky.social so this is interesting, apparently people are even reluctant to AV themselves even just to watch R-rated films, so AV really isn't that popular in practice for anything bsky.app/profile/mike...

Mike Stabile@mikestabile.bsky.social

Carnegie Mellon ran a study on consumer willingness to age-verify, requesting IDs to watch R-rated movies. Only 28% of users were willing to verify. THAT'S LESS THAN A THIRD. Imagine what it's like when it's something more controversial, like porn or LGBTQ content. www.cs.cmu.edu/~sscheffl/do...

@paulbernal.bsky.social so, AV for porn didn't stop kids and people actually going through with AVing themselves is lower than 2%. What an expensive waist of time (and i suspect duckduckgo is going to be more popular) bsky.app/profile/mike...

A year after the Online Safety Act, British regulator Ofcom confirms its age-verification regulations haven't stopped kids from accessing porn — despite widespread industry compliance. "Our research shows that almost half of the pornography services visited by children have no age checks in place"

@paulbernal.bsky.social I'd say I'm speechless put this is a woman who believed when someone at google told here algorithms where the result of someone turning dials to show more liberal or more conservative content bsky.app/profile/mike...

Mike Stabile@mikestabile.bsky.social

One of the conservative architects of the UK's Online Safety Act is suddenly shocked — shocked! — to find that it applies to anti-immigrant content she likes. Censorship is a hungry, hungry, profoundly stupid beast.

@paulbernal.bsky.social it's frightening that someone understands the Internet so little that they think this is a good idea bsky.app/profile/owen...

Yesterday in the Lords, Lib Dem peer Floella Benjamin floated the idea that tech companies and IT platforms should need a licence from Ofcom to operate in the UK hansard.parliament.uk/lords/2026-0... HT @cyberleagle.bsky.social Is this still about protecting the children #openweb #techpolicy

Time to rehash my old yes minister inspired joke from over a year ago bsky.app/profile/baku...

The working class are to distracted to follow new legislation, the middle class are so up there arse to think carefully when it comes to pushing for the legislation and the upper class don't care because there insulated from legislation and everyone else has to pick up the peace's.

@paulbernal.bsky.social I can see where this is going, burden forces all porn to be blocked in the uk, VPN usage goes up, suddenly using a VPN is associated with looking for illegal porn, because OBVIOUSLY you must be looking for something illegal from a blocked site bsky.app/profile/owen...

Owen Boswarva@owenboswarva.bsky.social

Relatively common tropes, vaguely defined in law – it will be difficult for platforms to sift out illegal content. Anti-porn/sw crusaders no doubt hope the administrative burden will force platforms to block the UK, with broad effect on legal availability of online porn (and on offline collections).
