Delivering the Cluster Munition Coalition statement at the UN General Assembly's First Committee in New York, the CMC reminded the room that the Convention on Cluster Munitions is the only international treaty comprehensively prohibiting these abhorrent and indiscriminate weapons—and that it works.

But these achievements are under grave threat. In our intervention, the CMC called on all states to: 1. Condemn any use of cluster munitions, by anyone, anywhere, under any circumstances 2. Defend the Convention and its norms, with no double standards

3. Halt all production, transfer, transit and other assistance facilitating further use 4. Universalize the Convention, and adopt moratoria on use, production, and transfer as an immediate step 5. Vote YES on this year's UNGA resolution on the Convention on Cluster Munitions #BanClusterBombs

The Review Conference may have closed on 18 September, but our work is far from over. Meeting in Laos, one of the countries most contaminated by cluster munitions, was a powerful wake-up call for everyone who attended. #BanClusterBombs

Our campaigners have returned home with renewed determination to rid the world of these atrocious weapons. This #NonViolenceDay, we recommit to that goal, and we hope the day cluster munitions become a weapon of the past comes sooner rather than later.

The job is far from done. But today we pause for a second in appreciation of all humanitarians out there, especially mine action workers, for their hard work in making the land we walk on safer. #MineFreeWorld #BanClusterBombs #ActForHumanity

Our thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues of those who lost their lives, and with the injured and their loved ones. Humanitarian workers must never be targets. The loss of any humanitarian worker is a loss for all of us who share this mission. We grieve alongside you.

NPA's teams do some of the most dangerous and most necessary work there is: clearing landmines, cluster munitions and explosive remnants of war so that communities can return home and rebuild. They put themselves in harm's way so that others can live more safely.

CMC is in Addis Ababa this week for the Universalisation & Implementation Workshop for & by African States. Ahead of September's 3rd RevCon, our message is clear: 1- Accelerate ratifications 2- Encourage accessions 3- Engage neighbors Africa's leadership is central to #BanClusterBombs

On 30 May 2026, the Convention on Cluster Munitions marks 18 years since its adoption in Dublin in 2008. And today, the Regional Workshop on Universalisation of the CCM for Asia and Pacific States is ongoing in Vientiane, Lao PDR, hosted by the Lao PDR Presidency of the 3rd Review Conference.

The Cluster Munition Coalition campaigner Vidya Abhayaa from Sri Lanka is on the ground this week, a voice from the Asia-Pacific region itself, holding bilateral meetings with delegations from Brunei, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste and Tonga.

The Coalition's push before the 3rd Review Conference in September is clear: 1- Accelerate ratifications, 2- Encourage accessions, 3- Mobilize States Parties to actively engage their neighbors. Stronger stigma = stronger protection for civilians.

Today in Geneva, CMC launched a Universalization Challenge at the opening of the 1st Preparatory Meeting for the 3rd Review Conference of the Convention on Cluster Munitions. With cluster munition use ongoing, the pressure to strengthen and grow the Convention has never been greater.

The challenge is directed at ALL states: - Signatory states > complete ratification without delay - Non-signatory states > take immediate steps to accede - States Parties > step up outreach and bring at least one new state on board ahead of Vientiane this September

Neither Iran, Israel, nor the United States has joined the Convention on Cluster Munitions. Nonetheless, indiscriminate attacks remain prohibited under international humanitarian law. The deaths of these civilians are a direct consequence of the failure to ban these weapons universally.

We agree, General. Cluster munitions are inherently indiscriminate, which is why 112 countries have banned them under the Convention on Cluster Munitions. The US has not joined. Neither have Iran or Israel. We urge all three governments to act on these words and join the ban.

At the same time, use has been documented and continues in Ukraine and Myanmar. In 2025, Lithuania became the first state ever to withdraw from the Convention. Nineteen years on, the Oslo Process stands as proof of what political will can achieve. Stop the Harm. Stand up for the Ban.

Today, progress remains strong: – 111 States Parties and 12 signatories – 42 States Parties have destroyed 100% of their declared stockpiles – 1.49 million cluster munitions and 179 million submunitions eliminated – Clearance continues in affected countries
