We have bigger models. Bigger conferences. Have our questions become bigger, too? That was the question I posed in my Presidential Address at #ACL2026 in San Diego. (1/6)

The new ACL Sustainable Reviewing Policy is out, following an early draft presentation at the ACL 2026 business meeting and input from many members of our community. The policy is now approved by the exec The central idea is: reviewing capacity must grow with submission volume. Key points: (1/n)

- The policy is complemented by measures to broaden and develop the reviewer pool: expanded qualification criteria, a manual route for researchers with equivalent experience, mentored secondary reviewing, and a proposed certification path for new reviewers.

- Not all authors of a paper are required to review. Instead, each submission should designate one qualified service contributor-an author or, where necessary, a non-author—who commits to reviewing or chairing in the same cycle and vouches for the paper.

At this year's ACL business meeting, it was wonderful to see so many attendees - a sign that this community cares. As president, I wanted to use the occasion to give some insights into ACL - the premier organization for computational linguistics, founded in 1962. (1/5)

I drew an organization chart to make these structures visible (attached). And even this chart doesn't capture it all: I simply cannot name everyone who contributes. Each box could be expanded to many more people working behind the scenes-committee members, editors, reviewers, and volunteers. (4/5)

To the many known and unnamed volunteers who contribute their time and expertise: thank you. ACL exists and drives because of you. 🙏 (5/5) #ACL #NLProc #ComputationalLinguistics

A look inside. 👇 The ACL Exec consists of 15 members: the presidency line (President, VP, VP-elect, Past president), treasurer and secretariat, members-at-large, chapter chairs (EACL, NAACL, AACL), the CL journal editor, and our business manager. The Exec is just the tip of the iceberg. (2/5)

A whole network of committees and officers keeps ACL running: ethics co-chairs, the Publication Ethics Committee, the Professional Conduct Committee, TACL co-editors-in-chief, Peer Review Committee, directors for the Anthology, information, sponsorship, equity, and publicity — among others. (3/5)

(6/6) Models evolve. Benchmarks evolve. Language remains. And as long as language remains, CL/NLP will remain important. Thank you to everyone who joined — and keep on doing great work at/for ACL! 💃 #ComputationalLinguistics #NLProc #ACL2026

(4/6) ✨ 2) Keep improving our science — evaluation should mature into a measurement science, with validity, reliability, and reported error. And we need open weights, open source, and open checkpoints.

(2/6) In 1967, early CL/NLP deliberately narrowed its scope — back then, narrowing was necessary. In 2026, in the era of LLMs and agents, we're seeing new kinds of narrowing. My call:

I’m at #ACL2026NLP to present ltzGLUE, a GLUE-style benchmark for Luxembourgish. We also release ltz-E1, a ModernBERT-based encoder trained only on Luxembourgish. Come find me on 7/7!

📜 Some of you may have heard about the desk-rejected papers from the ACL'26/ARR Jan 2026 or October 2025 cycles because of hallucinated references. These cases were detected post-commitment. ACL Program chairs have an official statement on this: 2026.aclweb.org/acl_statement/ #ACL2026NLP #NLProc

✨New paper✨ We find script (e.g. Cyrillic, Latin) to be a linear direction in the activation space of Whisper, enabling transliteration at test-time by adding such script directions to the activations — producing e.g. Cyrillic Japanese transcriptions.

I visited @uni-bamberg.de this week to give a Bamberg Center for AI lecture, and had the opportunity to meet many brilliant researchers, thanks for the invitation @bamnlp.de, @bamdial.bsky.social and BaCAI committee

.@barbaraplank.bsky.social visited @uni-bamberg.de to present her perspective on #labelvariation in natural language processing. A very inspiring talk, from which our #NLProc groups @bamnlp.de and @bamdial.bsky.social as well as groups working on other modalities learned a lot. Thanks, Barbara!

CIS & MaiNLP Group picture at EMNLP 2025! 🤩 🤗 (1/3) While I sadly 🥲 won't be at EMNLP this year myself, please do reach out to any of our members for a chat if you are interested in our research! We also co-organize and participate in some great workshops at EMNLP:

How do language models memorize noise while reason impressively well? Our #EMNLP2025 (poster, Nov 5, 11:00-12:30, Hall C) paper shows that memorization reuses internal mechanisms of generalization, even when they are not related to each other! arxiv.org/abs/2507.04782

At #Interspeech2025 I'm going to present Betthupferl, a dataset for German dialect ASR & dialect-to-standard speech translation! We analyze differences between dialectal & Standard German transcriptions, benchmark ASR models, and examine shortcomings of current ASR models & evaluation metrics.

So well-deserved, and such a great, supportive talk, especially kudos for including her students in the Lifetime Achievement Award! Thank you, Kathy ☀️
