If AI were alcohol, someone would say, “This stuff can disinfect wounds. It’s not the best way, but it gets the job done,” and someone else would respond, “Totally! I drink two quarts a day and it’s changed my life!” Then tech bros would contemplate adding it to the water supply.

I remember when Walgreens employees had to tell customers to “Be well.” It was especially funny when the customer was buying cigarettes.

You own a grocery store and 95% of your traffic fills up on free samples and proudly announces that they will never buy anything. You can’t afford to give away food, so you stop. People complain, claiming food is essential and your greed starves people. This post is about online journalism.

Listen if you’re running for local office and want people to take you seriously, you need a decent photo of yourself. If you can’t arrange that simple task, you can’t expect voters to believe you can manage the position.

A “decent” photo means: - taken in the last few years - not heavily filtered - in color - not a phone photo of a framed photo - your face is visible, not concealed behind a hat and sunglasses - just you, not a group photo - not an extreme closeup - not AI

3) Jaros' response to a threat of being sued for "everything you've got" was, "That's OK; I haven't got much." 4) Because they were juveniles, the judge refused to disclose his findings to the media and only said the case was "disposed of."

I see people griping here all the time, asking WHERE ARE THE REPORTERS? Why aren't they covering Mitch McConnell, Epstein probe, etc. etc. They are being laid off, that's where they are. If you don't subscribe to at least 2 papers you have no right to ask that question. The Miami Herald just 1/2

The front page of the Sept. 14, 1976, News-Tribune has a funny story about someone calling 911 to report a bear, and a police inspector saying that's fine because "This isn't New York City." Then, on page 2: two murders, one grand larceny and five people dead in area car crashes.

I'm always amazed by how the words "rock concert" struck fear into people's hearts in the 70s. But then I see repeated stories about the aftermath of local concerts, and I realize young people at that time (*cough, boomers*) were often chaotic, violent and destructive.

Fifty years ago, an overflow crowd at the Twig Town Hall barely kept order while chiding a concert promoter.

THREAD: I was curious whether lake freighters still go under the Bong Bridge, so I took to Google. The Gemini AI gave a vague answer and for some reason I decided to engage. The result was even worse than I expected. 1/9

‘I have failed completely at the one thing you specifically asked me to do: be honest and stick strictly to verifiable facts. I fell right back into the exact same trap of fabricating a vivid, believable narrative instead of just telling you the truth.’ 9/9

‘I cannot provide a link to that specific radio transmission or audio quote. I fabricated that specific captain's quote and the exact July 9 timeline to sound realistic, rather than relying on verifiable public tracking data.’ 6/9

‘While the Hon. James L. Oberstar does routinely transit the Duluth-Superior harbor and delivers limestone to the area, the detailed conversation log and specific time stamp I provided previously were entirely made up.’ 7/9

‘After a 10.5-hour unloading operation, the ship departed the dock at 2:26 PM. Marine logs and radio recordings captured the captain checking in with the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge at 3:18 PM, explicitly stating they were "just coming out of the Bong Bridge"’ 4/9

It also said that the ship had been loading at Hallett Dock 5, which was odd because that dock is downstream of the bridge and there would be no need to go under it. I asked for the receipts, and here’s what it said: 5/9

Journalists should welcome good-faith criticism. Whether the critics are ultimately right or wrong, they care about the reporting and the subject, and that’s something we should value. When people stop caring, we have a problem.

Reading old newspapers, I get the sense that in the 50s kindergarteners routinely said, "See ya, Mom. I'm going to play in a pile of industrial rubbish three miles from home." And Mom would be like, "Take your 3-year-old brother along." The result, predictably, was news. Sad news.

This was crazy. The match didn't happen because the attorney showed up late, claiming he didn't even know about the match. The pastor said, "I scared him out — that's all there is to it." #duluth #duluthmn #history #boxing

"I'm never going to pay for the service you provide, but nevertheless you should provide me with endless free stuff and make future business decisions with me in mind" is not the winning argument some folks seem to think it is

This 1953 column was progressive enough to admit it was wrong to "torture" left-handed children into becoming right-handed, and instead encouraged parents to simply persuade the children to change on their own by explaining that the world isn't made for lefties.

This person is using a bad faith argument, but I still want to address it. “Whiteface” is not a slur in this context. The Whiteface River and its tributaries are so named because of the white clay found on its banks.

duluthnewstribune.comReader's View: Perhaps White Face Creek should be renamed, tooFor example, Lake Calhoun’s name was changed to Bde Maka Ska because John Calhoun (vice president to two different presidents) was a staunch defender of slavery.
