Today is my last day as Chair of the Department of Political Science at Rice University. Academic leadership is about helping good people do good things. It has been my honor and privilege to support our faculty and students over the last ten years. Welcome to Guillermo Rosas who starts tomorrow!

So proud of these students! The next phases of their careers take them to Arizona State University, Wesleyan University, San Diego State University, Universidad de los Andes, and Russell Reynolds.

Rice University Political Science@ricepolisci.bsky.social

Professor Erik Peterson was one of two faculty across the university to receive the Provost’s Award for Outstanding Early Career Achievement. Dr. Peterson has changed what we know about local news and political communication.

It's wonderful to see our amazing faculty recognized for the investment they make in our students. Libby makes such a difference in providing our students with opportunities to do community engaged research and learning and guiding them through the process.

Rice University Political Science@ricepolisci.bsky.social

Professor Libby Vann won the Social Policy Analysis Student Association Faculty/Staff Mentor Award.

I gave! I hope @ricepolisci.bsky.social Ph.D. alums will help pay it forward by supporting the current students. The association is extremely well organized and managed, and they are using the funds in very positive ways.

Great to see this out! This review is important for IR scholars as well— under what conditions do women lead and what are the implications of that leadership? Highly recommend!

I highly recommend this new JCR article by @ricepolisci.bsky.social Ph.D. student @connerjoyce.bsky.social. It uses a creative empirical strategy to evaluate whether states can control non-state hackers operating from their territory if incentivized to do so-- key to international cooperation.

Excited to share that my first solo-authored article has been published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution! You can find it here (open access): doi.org/10.1177/0022...

Hey polisky-- @iojournal.bsky.social is now accepting "essays" in addition to research articles and research notes. Read more on the website linked here ⬇️

International Organization@iojournal.bsky.social

IO now welcomes -- in addition to research articles and research notes --a new type of submission, "essays." Essays have a 10,000 word limit. They propose innovative ideas of interest to a broad audience of IR scholars. For more info on the essay format, please visit cambridge.org/core/journal...

2 days until the March 31 deadline to apply for feedback on a paper at the IO Editorial Cafe, held virtually May 20. Apply here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

International Organization@iojournal.bsky.social

The fourth IO Editorial Cafe will be held virtually on May 20, 2024, from 10:30am-noon EDT. Editorial board and editorial team members will provide feedback to authors as they prepare manuscripts for submission to IO or other selective journals.

Reference lists are no longer included in the word count at @iojournal.bsky.social. Our word limits remain generous at 14k for articles and 8k for notes. We want authors to be inclusive in their citation practices and to cite all relevant work. Pass the word!

International Organization@iojournal.bsky.social

IO has revised its policies regarding word limits: we no longer include references/works cited as part of the word count. See our full submission guidelines here: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

If you haven't read Ayse Zarakol's work, you are missing out. Her @iojournal.bsky.social articles are ungated through the end of the year in honor of this major national award. See links in the thread below. Congratulations, @aysezarakol.bsky.social!

Bruce Russett was one of the most influential IR scholars of his time both through his research and his long-term editorship of JCR. I was always struck by his kindness and intellectual curiosity. He always showed interest in my work and treated me with respect. (going to try to link another post)

(cont.)Maya Angelou said “At the end of the day people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.” Russett made me feel like I belong in political science. Our legacies are much more than just our publications and our awards-- they are in how we treat others. RIP

Students interested in learning more about our Ph.D. program in political science at Rice University can join one of these virtual meetings with me and others from the department. We'll talk about the program and the application process and answer questions. Please share with students!

You are up to date.
