@cyclefunmontreal.bsky.social you have a new place to try... The new bike path between Brossard and the one already opened on the Samuel De Champlain Bridge just opened this afternoon 😁

"We know what prevents deaths of people cycling, it’s the same thing that will shift people from “interested but concerned” to choose cycling: high-quality cycling infrastructure like protected bike lanes. The only thing standing in the way of us having that is political will [...]"

"Keeping people divided is useful for some political interests, but it doesn’t help any of us get around any quicker or reduce traffic. We should resist being forced into a specific identity: we’re all just commuters, in it together, but using different kinds of transportation."

"Cities need planting strategies tailored to local conditions rather than universal greening formulas [...] The findings also suggest cities should move beyond measuring success through tree numbers alone. The arrangement, density and type of vegetation matter just as much as canopy cover."

Very interesting tool by @cjlm.ca to map the walkability of cities across Canada : aportee.ca You can select different types of amenities (grocery, library, hospital, park...) and visualize its accessibility on foot. For now it seems that there is no option to show by bike or public transit.

This work is inspired by close.city, a similar visualization tool focused on cities across United States. In this case you can see the accessibility by walk but also by bike and transit.
“Most Canadians are exposed to Ultrafine particles (UFPs) on a daily basis and these pollutants are not currently regulated, despite growing evidence linking them to increased mortality risk [...] While air quality regulations have reduced many pollutants, UFPs are not currently regulated"
« Au Canada, une grande partie de la population est exposée quotidiennement aux particules ultrafines (PUF), qui ne sont aucunement réglementées à l’heure actuelle, même si les données probantes montrant qu’elles augmentent le risque de mortalité sont de plus en plus nombreuses »

"Cities can start with paint and posts to establish a basic network quickly, demonstrate usage, and then harden high-priority segments with concrete as funding allows. This staged approach gets more streets safer for everyone sooner rather than delaying everything for premium designs."
"The real challenge is building cities where people have multiple viable transportation choices [...] When every single person must drive for nearly every activity, congestion is not a bug in the system; it is the inevitable outcome of the system itself."

Trying the new branch of @remgrandmtl.bsky.social in Montreal before its official opening tomorrow. Nice to meet some contacts there. It is very interesting to see how the global public transit network changed those last few years in Montreal despite all the challenges (and attacks) it is facing.
To give you an idea of the new branch with its 4 stations, here is a video from @emmacardinal.com

"That may be the most important lesson about local speed mitigation tactics. These moves can clearly save lives; researchers don’t doubt their effectiveness. Even better, many residents are eager to see them implemented. The missing link: policymakers courageous enough to do the right thing."
"Canada and Mexico must urgently break the chain of deepened integration with the U.S., as the latter has proven to be driven by violence, openly hostile to regulation, dismissive of international norms and indifferent to the deleterious cross-border consequences of its policies."

Sometimes good urban planning means lack thereof planning—letting go & allowing things organically to happen! This goes for zoning, parks (see desire paths), and how we regulate/allow public streets/spaces to be used (informal events, art, commercial uses, resting spaces, transportation modes, etc)
I like how I went to planning school to then become an illustrator and write essays about why we shouldn’t plan so much. Anyway I have a piece on the effervescence of messy parks in this book.
"When we design with the everyday needs of the most vulnerable in mind, we create environments that are more humane, more livable, and ultimately better for all."

10/ We wrote our report to help at-risk people stay safe. Never thought we’d need to aim its lessons at the Pentagon. But here we are. Security is not just a tech issue. It’s a people issue. And some of the people in the highest offices in the land apparently need remedial OPSEC. Urgently.
