In September, the AI company Anthropic claimed its models were approaching “superhuman capabilities for geolocating outdoor photos”. Bellingcat put that claim to the test by benchmarking the performance of Anthropic and other LLMs. Here’s what we found: www.bellingcat.com/resources/20...

Therefore, despite models improving it remains vital to keep a human in the loop to ensure a geolocation is precise and correct.

But the tests also showed why humans remain necessary for accurate and trustworthy geolocation work, as no models were foolproof.

While many models were good at identifying general areas, pinpointing exact coordinates was more of a challenge. As any online investigator knows, this final stretch in identifying an exact spot is vitally important. Our tests show that human geolocators still have the edge in this area.

We’ve previously done two similar tests. This time, we significantly upped the ante for the models, providing more challenging photos and asking for only one set of coordinates. The top-performing models placed over 50 percent of the photos within 25 kilometres.

The results showed that the current generation of models have improved geolocation capabilities. Anthropic’s Opus and Fable, as well as Google’s recent Gemini 4 Argon model, performed the best on geolocations, narrowing down locations from images faster than a human could under specific conditions.

This image mostly shows vegetation and a, barely visible, rooftop. For an average person, identifying the country this photo was taken in without any context could take a significant amount of time. However, multiple models quickly narrowed it down to Kenya.

Several correctly inferred enough vegetation details to narrow down the exact part of the world and the park itself. It is important to note that even though some models were correct, others were significantly off.

Sanctioned Russian vessel the Patria, which has been shuttling between ports on the west coast of Africa since March this year and was last seen loitering off the coast of Lagos is on the move again. Planet satellite imagery captured the vessel at the Port of Douala, Cameroon on October 16th.

Satellite imagery and AIS data show that a Russian vessel, has shuttled between Cameroon and Gabon four times since March. Experts told Bellingcat that the unusual set of movements warrants scrutiny, especially as the ship is under sanction and is previously reported to have shipped arms.

Experts previously told us that the Russian vessel's movements, going back and forth around the west coast of Africa, were highly unusual and may warrant scrutiny. The tanker, which is under sanctions, has previously been reported to have transported weapons.

The action prompted U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes to call an emergency hearing earlier this week, banning any further changes until later this month.

The satellite pictures detail changes across a wide swath of the East Potomac Golf Links. On the ground images taken at course earlier this week, meanwhile, show trunks and branches strewn out across fairways.

Ekal USA states it is building schools in rural India. Sewa USA calls itself a “Hindu faith-based, humanitarian, nonprofit service organisation”.

In US public filings for two US-registered non-profits that appeared to have ties to the RSS, documents detailed donations from 2020 to 2024 of at least US$24.4 million from 34 organisations that manage donor-advised funds (DAFs), making up 20.7% of their total received contributions.

Much of the grant spending by these two charities was to organisations or individuals in India or the South Asia region, in the five years from 2020 to 2024. Ekal USA declared $33.7 million in grants for education projects in India, while Sewa reported giving $29.7 million to groups in South Asia.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is widely considered the ideological parent of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a former RSS worker, is one of its most famous supporters.

The RSS was previously banned in India three times over its alleged role in violence, and almost a hundred US politicians, both Democratic and Republican, recently pledged not to take funding from RSS-linked entities.
