I'm playing Silksong again and I reminded myself of a problem I had on my first playthrough. I avoided going to Mount Fay for a long time. I walked on and saw I was taking damage because it was cold and figured, "Oh, I'll get the varia suit equivalent and come back. That item is on Mount Fay.

It was only when I wondered, "Gosh, where's the thing for cold? I'm just not finding it." and I looked it up and learned what I had to do. People made fun of David Jaffe struggling with Metroid Dread but this is the kind of thing that I think he was struggling with. There's no easy fix.

This is one of the things that I think makes Metroidvania'd hard to design. When you come to a challenge sometimes you need a new tool but other times it's a skill check and it isn't always obvious which is which. Mount Fay is actually a platforming challenge where you rush between warm spots.

I gotta say, maybe I just spend too much time online so I see it too often but, "What's that? You emotionally resonated with something and now that author is revealed to be a bigot? Well their writing's been bad the whole time! I always hated them! Sucks to suck!" is the most tiring posture.

I already knew it but this was a good reminder. Conservatives will generally frame their unpopularity or lack of representation in a demographic as, fundamentally, a conspiracy. Liberals frame their failure as a problem with policy or tone. One is malicious, the other self-defeating.

Yes, overall, the faculty skews liberal. The percentage of registered Republicans has cratered. Might that have something to do with the fact that the Republican Party is now dominated by climate denialism, anti-science frauds who deny modern medicine, and โ€œBig Lieโ€ truthers?
