About a year and a half ago, I was diagnosed as autistic Level 1, with mild ADHD. The impact it's had on the way I view myself, and how I perceive the world, has been striking. Being late-diagnosed has led to plenty of insights, and even more questions. Making art helps me cope. #art #audhd

I’ll be participating in the annual Marwen Art Fair (its 20th Anniversary!) and have submitted some “Scrappers” pieces to represent. On display and up for auction will be a set of custom Scrapper and Brawler toy prototypes, as well as my “M.A.R.10” figure, with a couple “2.0” modifications.

Since my AuDHD diagnosis, I've had all sorts of insights into issues I've dealt with over the years that I've now come to understand were due to the way my body processes interoception/proprioception. Today, I'm going to talk about tongue posture. 🧵

Anyway, I've since been trying to train my tongue, and have noticed an improvement in breathing, more restful sleep, and I've felt... calmer, overall. It doesn't solve everything, but it helps. As such, I thought it was worth posting about just in case anyone else can relate. 👍

Through all the post-diagnosis digging I've done, I believe I have issues with interoception (the body's internal monitoring system) and proprioception (the body's sense of the positioning of your limbs, joints and muscles in space) and because of this, I've had poor tongue posture for yeeeears.

I'm not sure what research rabbit hole I was going down that revealed this, but I realized I always held my tongue at a low position at rest, rather than being in contact with the roof of my mouth, which is "proper tongue posture". Why was I only learning about this now, in my fifties??

I've struggled with sleep apnea, inflammation, poor circulation, high blood pressure, and all of that contributed to cardiovascular disease. My doctors essentially summed it up as due to genetics, it's just "the cards I'd been dealt", and that may well be. But it may be more nuanced than that.
