🚨new paper alert🚨the first paper of PhD student Paul Botté and the first dataset of clumped isotonic data acquired at @cerege.bsky.social by @r0seturqu0ise.bsky.social! Investigating the late Eocene - Oligocene climate evolution in Balkanatolia with a new terrestrial record.
doi.org/10.5194/cp-2...
A new paper from the @dispersal-erc.bsky.social project! In this study, we investigated how embrithopods, these massive herbivorous mammals who once throve in Africa, succeeded to cross the Neotethys and diversified on Balkanatolia (1/n)

My Master's research (now expanded with new collabs) is finally published! Together with Grégoire Métais, Emmanuel Gheebrant, Ni Xijun, @nilschabrol.bsky.social, and Marc Godinot, we describe exceptional new dental material of Coryphodon from Le Quesnoy (northern France, Eocene). @cr2p.bsky.social

This material revealed us that some supposedly
diagnostic character states actually fall within intraspecific variabilité.
Based on this, we propose to synonymising C. anthracoideus and C. oweni with the type species Coryphodon eocaenus.
To better understand the evolution of the Coryphodontidae, we also computed the first cladistic and probabilistic phylogenies on this family, and reconstructed the ancestral origin area at the nodes.
The first article from my PhD has just been published in JAES: "Lutetian swamp-freshwater palynoflora from Bultu-Zile (central Anatolia, Türkiye): implications for Eocene ecosystems of Balkanatolia".

Finally, climatic reconstruction methods (Coexistence Approach and CREST) indicate a warm-temperate climate with hot summers.
This support the idea that faunal endemism in Balkanatolia was rather driven by insular isolation, rather than climatic or environmental barriers.

This is one of the first inland-deposited palynofloras from the Eocene of Türkiye. It is dominated by swamp-freshwater taxa, including Cupressaceae, Ludwigia (Onagraceae), and ferns.

🎙️ Our first interview is out!
Meet Leny Montheil, geodynamicist and paleogeography specialist, as he takes us back to the Eocene to explore how primates dispersed across a changing world.

A new preprint from our research group is online!
In this paper, Paul Botté, PhD student in the project at @climatecerege.bsky.social, studied the evolution of continental environmental through the late Eocene and earliest Oligocene in central Anatolia.

🎙️ First episode of a series of interviews with the scientists involved. Stay tuned — more interviews coming soon!
Today, we organized a vulgarisation workshop about paleopalynology at the Musée Espace Gaïa in Montereau-Fault-Yonne for the "Fête de la Science"! Rafael Cabral, Adele Giobbini and myself (with the help of @mathildelp.bsky.social) presented 3D printed pollen grains to the public.
Last days of fieldwork in Anatolia, with Serkan Akkiraz, Paul Botté and @benjaminraynaud.bsky.social! Exploring the Sivas Basin to date the onset of the modern steppe landscape with various stratigraphic and paleobotanical tools. Part of the @dispersal-erc.bsky.social project!
First day of the third field trip to Turkey for Paul Botté and @benjaminraynaud.bsky.social. One week to collect their last samples before their ultimate task: writing their dissertation!
@benjaminraynaud.bsky.social presenting his PhD results at @cerege.bsky.social today ! Benjamin works on the evolution of ecosystems during the dispersal events we investigate in the project via pollen analysis.

Delighted to share our paper on data equity in #palaeobiology as part of Paleobiology's 50th anniversary issue 🥳
We look at how palaeo data is collected, stored, curated & shared, and how equity in these processes is crucial for our field's future (1/n) 🧪⚒️

🚨New paper alert!🚨 A long and precise stratigraphic and geochronological study led by Leny Montheil to better refine the time of formation of Balkanatolia, this strange biogeographic province that we have been studying for a decade now. (1/n)

Amazing workshop last week in Arles, focused on how integrating geological and paleoclimatological constraints in phylogenetic and biogeographic reconstructions! 11 countries, 55 people, and 3 days of talks and brainstorming with a balanced group of biologists, geologists and climatologists.
Welcome to @benjaminraynaud.bsky.social on the Blue place! Benjamin in a PhD student in Paleobotany, working with us on understanding the changes in ecosystems which could have favored the dispersal of primates and ungulates out of Asia during the Eocene.
