I need help identifying a #bumblebee! I’m in the Peruvian Andes, cloud forest near Salkantay (and Machu Picchu). We spotted this monstrously big orange bumblebee, 3-4cm long (see picture. We actually spotted them twice, but only managed to photo once). My best ID so far is Bombus dahlbomii, but…

Disappointing new study showing - once again - that women are leaving research careers at far higher levels than men If you're interested to read about strategies to reverse these types of curves, check out our recent #Cell perspective- link below ⤵️ #WomeninSTEM 👩‍🔬👩🏾‍🔬🧪 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Loved this session and excited to try growing some dye plants this year (that are also #Pollinator friendly of course!) and dye my own wool

Sustainable Food Trust@susfoodtrust.bsky.social

We were delighted to welcome people to a wool skills workshop at #ORFC25 this morning. The session highlighted the wonders of wool and why it needs to be considered as more than just a byproduct.

I forgot to include the all important #ORFC!

Excited to be attending my first Oxford Real Farming Conference in person this week and to participate in two sessions- 1) #biodiversity in #polycultures (Thurs) and 2) #insectsentience and #agroecology (Fri) with @natacharossi.bsky.social @vickihird.bsky.social - hope to see some of you there!

Funded PhD opportunity in the Graystock lab! If you are interested in pollinators, microbes, parasites and machine learning, please get in touch! - only a few days left to let me know! Whilst a project using the above is planned, im happy to adapt to the strengths of a candidate

We found that both active and RMR change over time post-eclosion, as does speed and mass specific metabolic rate, something that is also easy to measure with our method. The RMR of restrained bees was consistently higher than those at true rest, again highlighting the benefit of using our method 3/4

Once published we will upload all the code and .STL files etc needed for the set up, but feel free to contact us for more info in the meantime if you're interested in adopting a similar approach e.nicholls@sussex.ac.uk #metabolism #physiology #AnimalBehaviour 4/4

We looked at shifts in metabolism of #honeybee workers in the first 48 hours post-eclosion. The method allowed us to measure true resting and active metabolism in the same individuals over time, by automatically extracting bees movement speed. We then compared this to the RMR of restrained bees 2/4

These results are important, because they indicate that bumblebees would be able to rapidly evaluate the amino acid content of floral resources like nectar and pollen, directly at the flower, and may not need to wait for post-ingestive cues or feedback from their nestmates. 1/3

You are up to date.
