So sad to hear of @helenbranswell.bsky.social ‘s passing. She was the best of the best. A master of science communication with a deep understanding of immunology, epidemiology and public health. Her interview questions cut straight to the point and I trusted her implicitly. She will be missed.

Absolutely stunning/horrifying to see a 5th measles death in PA. This means the outbreak is probably far higher than numbers count, seeing as roughly 1-3 people die per 1,000. Many people aren't being tested. Also: I'm going to states now for info, not the CDC* app.powerbigov.us/view?r=eyJrI...

Good timing to get to this surprise line in Colson Whitehead, Cool Machine: “The High Holidays usually found Zippo in synagogue smug and content, wracking his brain for something to atone for: Nada.”

I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure. Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.

SCOOP: So remember Dialog, Peter Thiel's private society that doesn't have a public website and no public list of members? I (along with a number of other journalists) have just been tipped off that embedded in the code of their closed off website there IS what seems to be a list of some members.

ICE will no longer publicly report the deaths of immigrants recently released from detention. ICE frames this as "common sense," when in fact, it's an effort to obscure the true number of people who die as a result of being detained—especially now as in-custody deaths surge.

nbcnews.comICE will no longer report deaths of detainees who have recently been released from custodyThe goal of the 2021 policy was to ensure that ICE could not avoid accountability for deaths by releasing severely ill people from custody.
