This morning, both the BC Conservatives and the BC NDP ruled out a vehicle levy to fund public transit in Metro Vancouver. This despite the vehicle levy being commonly used in other cities, including Montreal, Seattle, and the bustling metropolis of Gatineau, Quebec.

“HOV lanes are not the solution that we need on one of the busiest transit corridors in North America,” said Sam Holland with Better Transit YYJ. “The problem with going to HOV lanes, you then need to enforce them.” #yyj cheknews.ca/dvba-floats-...

On Friday, we proved that even buses running ahead of schedule are still too slow. BC Transit, the City of Victoria, and the District of Colwood are the institutions that need to step up. Together, we will keep push for a better, safer, more reliable city. #yyj #racethebus

BC Transit’s long-awaited rollout of contactless payment comes in the shadows of criticism from those who argue the agency should instead be using its surplus funds to address other transit needs.

Caleb Crookes, vice-president of transit advocacy group Better Transit YYJ, said his organization welcomes the change. “It would have been excellent had that been slightly higher on the to-do list, but overall, I think I speak for everyone when I say that we’re all excited for this.” #yyj #transit

Why hasn't transit kept up with growth? @bettertransityyj.ca Chair Sam Holland argues that the Province has never taken transit as seriously as highways. When deficits need fixing, transit is first on the chopping block.

Getting more and better transit is a big lift that requires collaboration, and that's why we are overjoyed to be part of a new coalition called the Public Transit Alliance of BC. Yesterday, we launched our first province-wide campaign, a call for an intercity public transit network. #yyj #bcpoli

"If you are trying to go to Duncan, or anywhere north of Duncan, you might as well be trying to go to the moon on public transit" Sam Holland - @bettertransityyj.ca on @cheknews.ca @ 3 min cdn.jwplayer.com/previews/BLs... #bcpoli #yyj #VancouverIsland #Nanaimo

The big gaps in transit come from the 1970s. When BC Transit was pulled out of BC Hydro, a second Crown corp was also created— Pacific Coach Lines. PCL ran intercity busses, most famously the Victoria to Vancouver bus. When PCL was privatized, BC lost the model for public intercity transit.

BC Transit was never meant to run intercity busses. That's why they are set up for local transit only— they were never meant to. Building a public intercity transit network is going to mean building a new transit institution in the Province, something we haven't done in 25 years.
