I’m anti-capitalist in that I think it would be insane to think that this is the best economic technology that humans can ever invent. Imagine if we thought that way about feudalism.

You can be optimistic about the future while carrying a sober respect for nature. We learned to understand, harness, and constrain electricity and nuclear forces. Intelligence can follow, and can even help us learn how to do it safely.

Lots of financial stability comes from the fact that there’s a lot of grunt work and grinding in almost every field. I’m not sure we have a large scale solution to what happens when most of the grind is automated.

I have significantly better work/life balance because of AI. I can even work from my phone at the park sometimes. Or just go for walks while Codex runs something for me. Same at home! Administrative work is so fast. Can’t imagine having to go back to the old way.

Started a stint in model design this week. omg OpenAI is awesome. I don't know if I can even describe what it is that I'm getting to do in a way that would make sense to a normal company. Anyway if Chat bumps you the wrong way lmk 🙏

In an ASI world, having a human in the inner loop of a process will slow it down to the point of it being competitively obsolete compared to a fully-automatic process. This includes engineering, product development, manufacturing, corporations... Important to have human-led outer loop governance.

Optimistic for a future when people don't read every news item or announcement with immediate mistrust or cynicism. I know it's a "fool me 4001 times, shame on me" world we live in now, but it doesn't have to be that way.

I often think about the time a guy dismissed my work because LLMs are just stochastic parrots and I asked him if he came up with that on his own or repeated something he heard. Not as a dig but because we all have blind spots.

I’m for the WA state tax proposals. As a startup founder and investor who loves the local culture and natural beauty, a thriving community will only make me love living here more. Happy to pay my share, my lifestyle lets me afford it. I wish we’d go further for housing/infra too

If folks want to leave so they can afford more horse ranches or private islands elsewhere that’s fine with us locals. I’ll happily rent your sailboat on the weekends.

A must listen. The moral panic about AI is probably more dangerous than the reality.

In this week's ep about AI and energy use, we note that AI guzzles energy in large part because it requires a particular type of chip: the GPU. The Mythbusters guys did a helpful demo of GPU vs. CPU chips. Check it out here 👇 www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmW6...

I've been lucky enough to be challenged by Ted Chiang about AI, technology, capitalism, and philosophy myself and this article is an important read. I think it's crucially important to balance any technological pursuit with the philosophical implications it carries.

lareviewofbooks.orgLife Is More Than an Engineering Problem | Los Angeles Review of BooksJulien Crockett speaks with Ted Chiang about the search for a perfect language, the state of AI, and the future direction of technology.

“Wokeness” is just standing up for everyone’s right to the pursuit of happiness. I can’t think of anything more American than that. If you’re so unhappy you want others to be as wretched as you, I feel sorry for you, but don’t tread on everyone else.

Really excited to have gotten to canvass for this initiative. This is such a well thought out solution.

House Our Neighbors@houseourneighbors.bsky.social

The climate crisis is here. Our homes must address this. This is why all new buildings built by the Seattle Social Housing Developer must be built to passive house standards. Thanks to @holz-bau.bsky.social Prop 1A funds climate resilient buildings. Vote Yes on Prop 1 and Prop 1A.

You are up to date.
