All those who value democratic self-government have agency and can act to block the path towards authoritarian consolidation. I have no doubt about the MAGA movement’s intentions. But let us refuse to help them propagate the notion that reality does not apply to them. Please consider subscribing:

Weekend reading: I wrote a brief history of the Right deriding anything that threatens the social and racial hierarchy, any sort of leveling attempt, as "communism" or “socialism.” This week’s piece - about the Right’s attempts to demonize the idea of equality:

What if, instead of pedestrians pressing a button to beg for the traffic light to change so they can cross an intersection, cars had to do it? Not a wild utopian concept, this is reality in some cities. #bicycleutopia

Active Towns Classic: TU Delft Bike Priority Intersection
In 2019, I wandered down to TU Delft in the morning to check out this bike-priority intersection and was treated to this scene... I find it mesmerizing, even all these years later. youtube.com/shorts/_YnB1...

Voters replaced this team with a "guy they'd like to have a beer with" who led the US into two forever wars, blew up the deficit, spent 8-years shredding the Constitution, consumer protections and labor law, and crashed the world economy. Clinton was a better president than Americans deserved.

New data analysis “has provided fresh evidence that cycling is the fastest inner city rush hour transport, with new findings from London showing that 2 wheels beats the tube & cars for most trips…the bike beat 92% of matched trips aligned to TfL services, as well as 75% of rush hour driving trips.”

The bigger picture here is that Virginia is highly unusual both for its extremely harsh felony disenfranchisement rules and for giving its governor so much control over voting rights. In November, the state will vote on whether to change this system: boltsmag.org/virginia-con...

Paris has been praised in recent years for their visionary, progressive city-building, but they don’t get nearly enough credit for just being really pragmatic! Everything they’ve been doing is common sense. They’re moving a lot more people with less space while cleaning the air & cooling the city.

This is great news. Shipping, aka the foundation of the global economy, is s disproportionate contributor to pollution and climate change.

🚢☀️ China has delivered the world's first 10,800-vehicle carrier equipped with a solar power system. The vessel combines onboard solar generation with dual-fuel technology, highlighting how renewable energy is beginning to play a role in decarbonising global shipping.

Standing on the outside throwing rocks at the house is not advocacy. It’s a confession of powerlessness.

Melissa & Chris Bruntlett@modacitylife.com

"Gentle advocacy believes lasting change is more likely to emerge from inspiration than indignation. People are more willing to embrace a new future when they clearly see themselves in it. And showing what's possible is more effective than endlessly cataloguing what's wrong." READ: bit.ly/4wkWIuf

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.” Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life. Common sense. Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.

The oppressors will tremble when the streets are clogged with protestors not just on Saturday or on... scheduled protest days. Pay attention or pay the cost. The monsters in charge see this as a demonstration and not a protest.

Every single state should do this.

California just made it a literal felony for federal agents or law enforcement to touch ballots or tamper with voting machines without a warrant. Gov. Newsom just drew a massive line in the sand against regime interference: 👇 www.dworkinsubstack.com/p/8-resistan...

From a space for cars to a place for people, in one of my favourite past client cities, Groningen Netherlands. A powerful before-&-after transformation 1960s vs 2021. In recent years one of the city’s biggest challenges has been where to park all the bikes. Seriously. Imagine having that problem.

James Talarico@jamestalarico.bsky.social

There’s been a lot of talk in this race about what makes a "real man." A man does what’s right when no one is watching. He upholds his commitments to his family and neighbors. He doesn’t lie, cheat, & steal his way through life. Real men serve others. Weak men serve themselves.

Senator Andy Kim@kim.senate.gov

Senate Republicans just started a marathon voting session known as vote-a-rama in the Senate. Not to improve your life. Not to lower your costs. But to funnel $70 billion more to ICE and the abuses I saw at Delaney Hall. Not another dime.

And for those who are questioning my reference to “nearly a century” – it is referring to the paper published by Guy Callendar in 1937. To get the full story of the amazing cast of characters who contributed to fundamental understanding of climate science since the early 1800s, watch:

I’m a climate scientist. Let me fix this headline. “Nearly a century ago, scientists showed that burning fossil fuels warms the planet. Today, we know human emissions account for over 100% of the warming. Yet dark money and disinformation still work to keep Americans addicted to fossil fuels.”

And to everyone who is wondering, “how could humans be causing more than 100% of the warming?” — it’s because, according to natural factors, the earth should be cooling right now. So our emissions are offsetting that cooling AND causing all of the observed warming. For more, watch:

“During the 1950s-60s, the rise in automobile traffic transformed Dutch cities, resulting in traffic congestion, pollution, & an alarming increase in crashes. In 1971, more than 3,300 people lost their lives in crashes, including 400 children. These shocking numbers led to public protests…” Change.

Yesterday, Blanche refused to say Trump's $1.8 BILLION slush fund wouldn't be used to pay off convicted Jan 6 rioters & child molesters. I'm offering an amendment to prevent these criminals from getting a penny of your tax dollars. Will Republicans send your money to criminals & pedophiles?

Yesterday I said DJT’s $1.8 billion to pay J6ers and other Trumpists might be the most corrupt act in US gov’t history & also one of the most dangerous. I’ve had a day to think it over. On sober consideration: it might be the most corrupt act in US gov’t history & also one of the most dangerous.

MSM, some quick notes: 1. It’s not a settlement (the case was dismissed). 3. It’s not a ballroom (it’s a bunker). 3. It’s not a library (Trump said it will be a hotel). It matters that you get it right.

This is not a “deal.” This is a crime for which Trump & Blanche must be prosecuted. It is a crime.

David Rothkopf@djrothkopf.bsky.social

Trump did not reach a settlement with the government. There was no case to settle. He has not created a slush fund. He has colluded with Todd Blanche to steal money from the US Treasury. This is not a “deal.” This is a crime for which Trump & Blanche must be prosecuted. It ia a crime.

This is the right agenda. It’s going to require overwhelming turnout for the midterms and in 2028, and massive, sustained public mobilization from January 2027 to make these reforms unassailable. #GOTV
