Saw a reminder that even tho a book (like mine) came out a few years ago, it's still new to people who haven’t run across it yet. So, here’s to promoting your own work. The hardback has always been too pricey for anyone but libraries, but the paperback is $15 off. www.bloomsbury.com/us/david-hum...

Does this mean I've made it? The section on miracles in the new "David Hume" entry in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy" ends by saying my interpretation would make Hume's argument more plausible. plato.stanford.edu/entries/hume/

One year later - my reflections on what's happened to US science since the National Science Foundation grant terminations last year. The problem of misinformation isn't going away, but our ability to study and understand it is under attack. 1/ 🧪 www.tennessean.com/story/opinio...

I've been waiting for eye surgery for six months at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, and because of a nursing strike they just cancelled it 20 hours before it was going to happen. The best they could offer was another date *three months* from now. I'm so bummed.

The California State University system spent $16.9 million last year giving ChatGPT to all students, faculty, and staff. We are asking the CSU chancellor not to renew the contract with OpenAI when it expires. Anyone can sign the petition — link below!

Christian nationalists just won’t stop trying to violate freedom of thought. They are (still!) trying to push false (not to mention unconstitutional) nonsense about science into schools. This is a good opportunity for philosophers of science to demonstrate the public relevance of our work.

An Oklahoma lawmaker wants to force teachers to say that Creationism and Intelligent Design are plausible alternatives to evolution. The bill is unconstitutional, deeply dishonest, and insulting to students. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/an-oklahom...

I love this kind of pop sci article, that both clearly explains the science and reveals a human story at the same time.

Bad framing: ACIP voted to scrap the universal hepatitis B vaccine recommendation for newborns. Accurate framing: Anti-vax conspiracy theorists appointed to ACIP by Robert Kennedy Jr., who made a fortune as an anti-vax profiteer, voted to expose babies to a preventable, incurable, deadly illness.

Does this version of the Trolley Problem exist or did I just invent it? If you pull the lever now, the trolley's brakes engage. Unfortunately, its stopping distance means it will run over & kill 1 of 5 people tied to the tracks. If you don't pull or wait to pull, all 5 die. #philsky #philosophychat

Hi #philosophysky #philosophyofscience! Seen this? A physics paper claims there's something like an incompleteness theorem to the effect that (1) there is no algorithmic way to get a theory of quantum gravity, & (2) since simulations are necessarily algorithmic, that (3) our universe is not a sim.

What's true of (our current technology of) simulations *in* this universe need not be true of simulations *of* our universe. At least I see no reason it must be so. Someone w/ more math will need to assess the "no algorithm for QG" claim, but since there's no QG theory yet this seems to jump the gun

AI hypesters make it seem students must learn AI in college or they will fall hopelessly behind. That seems obviously untrue.... One YouTube video that calls itself a “master class” on AI prompt writing is <19 min long. We don’t need to undermine higher ed for a skill that can be explained in 19 min
