Starmer is attempting to play the same role that Macron tried with Putin in 2022 - somebody needs to engage with malignant aggressors even if its more in hope than expectation. Cutting them off entirely from reasoned argument has no upside. It didn’t work with Putin but it was worth trying.

I’m reminded of the words of the 60’s cultural icon Allan Smethurst, the Singing Postman - “l’ve never seen a farmer on a bike”.
