Very cool that our government will spin up tribunals to prove for the 10th time that one of the most widely used medication forms (vaccines) are in fact effective and safe. Meanwhile, absolute snake oil (supplements) is ignored by the FDA by law. And soon more by enforcement discretion.

I am just contemplating the absolute giddiness the national pundit class will have When It Happens. Leadership will still be racist, anti-woman, religiously weird, and funded by people that see us as digital Soylent Green for their machine gods. But actual words will be spoken in normal order!

It feels like we are now experiencing the cyber version of driverless car companies using American cities as sites for open beta. Something’s going to smash into a fire truck here, run over a pedestrian there… but it’s fine, models will improve. When do we get checks for providing this test service?

I’ve said this on a couple of previous occasions. You don’t have to pretend to like people upon their demise. If they caused great damage in life, it’s okay to breathe a sigh of relief that their mortality stopped the damage. Maybe even celebrate the energies liberated for actual world improvement.

With Slaughter and Cook together, SCOTUS has declared it is fine with massive natural disaster death tolls, disease outbreaks, cancer corridors, usurious banks, defective and deadly products … the one thing that needs protected expertise is financial markets. Time for some packing.

I think an extremely good critique on #Abundance is that there was a lot of ink spilled on community input and regulation, but not nearly enough on monopoly. If you own the market, you can optimize your backlogs and throttle production to max out use of your facilities and keep prices high. 1/

On the other hand, vigorous competition drives paranoia and a need to undercut the opposition on prices or quality. If we want prices to go down, the market points us to light overproduction. In Internet space we of course see the opposite, Enshittification, as markets are consolidated.

The argument against modern Republicanism isn’t just that they are here to empty your wallet for the rich (and they are). But also they are dedicated to burying our country in the past as a White Christian nationalist petrostate when all of those things can’t compete in current times.

The conversion therapy decision is bullshit. I absolutely despise quacks that dress up as legitimate professionals and steal the valor earned via intellectual integrity and seriousness. Same with crisis pregnancy centers. We agree that in medicine, law, and engineering that bad advice is harmful. 1/

Said professionals are told to take care to be clear when they are offering direct advice and can be sanctioned for what they put forward. We know this speech has major consequences and so it is important to take good care that it is best possible. 2/

Quacks and hucksters have no such care. Worse; they know what respected professionals look like and mimic their habits, maybe even acquire their credentials. This is nefarious and deserves punishment by law. Yes Colorado discriminated based on viewpoint. Because that viewpoint hurts people.

Anyone old enough to remember when TSA was recognized as security theater that sprung from an irrational fear of American Muslims? And now somehow there’s a need to back them up from another security group that started from Muslim fear but now has a mission based on hate for all immigrants.

The Democratic Party mission should be pretty simple to articulate: to make America a true multiracial democracy and to make all our institutions places where people are built up rather than shaken down. There’s a lot of space in that tent for exactly how to do it or describe the mission.

After all this time, I don’t know why it’s so hard to have the Democratic Party take on a generational project: complete America’s transition to a multiracial democracy and make the nation’s massive economic resources work to help everyone flourish. The job is there if we want it.

As frustrated as we are with Democratic inaction, we have to remember to say out loud that Republicans are absolute monsters. There is no such thing any more as a good Republican, same as there is no good Nazi. Anyone wearing the scarlet R has something wrong with their morals.

I should also say that while not all Dems are acting with the needed urgency, many are. The problem in the legislature is the caucus is too small. State AGs and governors have been fighting all year with a variety of tools. But we also see now just how dangerous the Presidency is in the wrong hands.

Where is the torrent of reporting on the mental health impacts and learning delays that will affect children kept home from school in fear of ICE? Our press had plenty of time to accuse public health people in a once in a lifetime pandemic. How about for this white supremacy in plain sight?

What amazes me about the Powell affair is how it shines a light on the one small part of government the wealthy haven’t insulated themselves from. We can have rampant disease, marauding police, toxic wastelands, and undetected storms. But the plutocrats still need public currency to function.

Looking at stories like this, it’s amazing how many “good ones” American communities have woken up to find in their midst as targets of the monsters behind ICE and CBP.

The arrest of Marcelo Gomes da Silva, a Brazilian-native honors student, thrust the town of Milford into the national spotlight, making it a flashpoint for Trump’s immigration enforcement. It also served as a catalyst for resistance in a town where dynamics around immigration have created fissures.

Forget the Civil War - the standard history curriculum should really focus on Reconstruction and Redemption and how the South really should have been put under a military rule for a full generation.

Since there’s some symmetry here with the death of a liberal celebrity against one Charlie Kirk, I’ll say: go ahead and speak of the dead as you would when they were alive. Praise your heroes, curse your demons. Whom you choose as which says more about your values than some bland decorum.

Today I am thankful that there are a lot of people in this country that still want a well-functioning, vibrant, and inclusive democracy. I hope our time and treasure dedicated to the cause bears fruit in a resurgence.

I wonder if in the whole Abundance approach, we find that slight overproduction of valuable things (houses, educations, medical services) is generally good in the same way that economists agree some tiny amount of inflation (~2%) is good. 1/

But social producers (gov or nonprofit with gov support) could be pushed to reach this overproduction which is usually seen as a bad outcome or lack of discipline from the market. And so maybe an antidote to monopoly is intentional market flooding by public options.

One more thought into the ether on this thread: the contradiction between low inflation good and oversupply / low deflation good is fixed by looking at the kinds of purchases you can’t defer. It’s best not to wait to fix a broken leg or get a roof over your head.

One thing the centrist Dems could do in their votes for the CR is skip the “pee on our legs and pretend it’s raining” phase. It’s a loss; act like it. Leave the field quietly and at most describe how you plan to train to not lose again.

One major overlooked thing in this fight was Gov Kemp giving away the game. He asked “if we (red states) have to pay for SNAP, where does it end?” Nat Guard, air travel? GA-GOP gets to be Santa Claus w/ low taxes while blue state money keeps us from collapsing. georgiarecorder.com/2025/10/30/k...

Now that there has been a strong electoral signal, perhaps it is time for the political press to ask why the US House of Representatives has been dissolved via Speaker fiat in order to protect the guilty named in the Epstein files.

Facts are stubborn things, but their provenance is very hard to demonstrate to non-experts. It’s in that tension that sooooo much disinformation mischief lives. There must be tactics available to defend those with good reality hygiene against bad actors. 1/

Acknowledge how hard it is! The false starts, the misdirection, and the moment of clarity of how the community came to consolidate this nugget of knowledge. Challenge the opponent to do the same. Now that AI slop is known, compare the opponent to a babbling chatbot if they can’t do this. 3/

The “debate me” bros often present the dilemma to experts of either going to a disadvantaged forum or coming off as disdainful of engagement or public outreach. Introducing people to good reality hygiene may be a better goal here than educating on a particular technical topic. /end

For example, the Gish Gallop is all about a heuristic that volume = mastery, and the one throwing all the mud on the wall is a master owning a less-knowledgeable opponent. Slowing this down can be done by focusing on one single fact and working carefully through how we know it. 2/

Just waiting for the “see, shouldn’t have called Bush and Cheney fascists because now you can’t escalate to describe Trump and Miller?” But is Trump really doing anything that different? Yes the net is much wider and fully on US soil but so much of this road to hell was paved already. 1/

Use of invented and bullshit terms to try and thwart the law by removing earlier cases of reference? Yup. Vilification of any opposition to any of this as unAmerican? Boy howdy. Tropes about sinister people derived almost fully from racism? Check. 3/

It’s all the same machinery. Pick an enemy and punish them. In fact, you don’t even have to get an actual enemy all the time because you’ve bullied your way into less scrutiny. The difference today I think is in degree and how much less frequently they even try to hide it.

Using maximal force and military units rather than investigative work to pursue targets? Check. Privatizing construction of unpleasant facilities with all the perverse incentives? Check. Extraordinary rendition? Of course. 2/

Not to get all focus group driven, but it does seem there is a good narrative to be had in Trump promising to lower prices and instead spike them, then show absolutely no interest when Dems put up a direct fix because now has a ballroom and citizen abuse content to make for fun.
