✨ 36 years ✨ An Avocet ringed as a chick at RSPB Titchwell, Norfolk, in 1990 smashed longevity records this year! It was sighted at RSPB Middleton Lakes in June 2026. The average lifespan of an Avocet is approximately 6 years, so this is an incredible age. πŸ™Œ πŸ“· Philip Croft / BTO

New #ornithology paper out in @royalsocietypublishing.org! We show that female dotterels can move across large distances within a single breeding season in search of mating opportunities, visiting up to five different sites (median: 3) and travelling up to 1000 km between sites (median: 71 km). 1/n

What can 20+ years of GPS tracking teach us about saving Eurasian Curlews? A lot! Tracking data from 626 curlews across Europe revealed remarkably strong fidelity to breeding & wintering sites, critical life stages, and key places & pressures affecting survival. πŸ‘‰ doi.org/10.1016/j.bi... 1/3

As Global Flyway Network we contributed to an Australia-wide assessment of non-breeding site fidelity of 12 shorebirds. Using 636,167 records of 84k individuals overall site fidelity was >95% but lower in Red Knot & Sanderling. Juveniles were less site faithful than adults. doi.org/10.1111/cobi...

Separately, whilst on St Kilda last month working on these endemic Wrens, a Redpoll which flew into our nets already had an ID ring. Turns out it was ringed in September 2025 as a first-year bird, on Sula in Norway. That's 1135km away from St Kilda! @jezierskimt.bsky.social @stkildawhs.bsky.social

Our new study, led by Sergi Herrando (EBCC chair, @ICOcells) published in Conservation Biology, shows that it is possible to create frequent and regular maps showing where farmland birds are disappearing across Europe by using the data from the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme (PECBMS).
