SOSGT is showing 18% better accuracy than GraphRAG, which I think is a pretty decent result? I still need to run it through memory benchmarks to see how well it actually holds up, but I’ve been too depressed to make much progress lately.

Anyway, is 18% a meaningful improvement, or am I getting excited over nothing?

SKUmon is a stupidly specific idea: scan a Home Depot barcode and turn the SKU into a Pokémon encounter inside a modified copy of Pokémon Emerald.

The mailbox address comes from the compiled ELF instead of being guessed or permanently hardcoded. The build pipeline compiles the ROM, finds the symbol, hashes the ROM, and generates a manifest.

The end goal is simple: scan some dumb thing at work, get a real Emerald battle, catch it with Emerald’s actual mechanics, and have that Pokémon show up in your logged-in SKUmon collection.

SKUmon is a stupidly specific idea: scan a Home Depot barcode and turn the SKU into a Pokémon encounter inside a modified copy of Pokémon Emerald.

The weird part was getting the browser and a GBA ROM to talk. The ROM now has a tiny mailbox in GBA RAM. The browser writes the encounter there. Emerald reads it and starts a wild battle.

Once Emerald gets the species and level, I get out of the way. IVs, personality, accuracy, crits, damage rolls, capture mechanics, etc. stay Emerald’s native RNG.

I stripped the game down around that idea. No gyms. No story. No wandering around looking for grass. START → SCAN → fight whatever the barcode gave you.

The website already handles the scan, account, rarity roll, and SKU→Pokémon mapping. The ROM does not pick the Pokémon. It gets told what you scanned.

I’m hacking game boy roms now and it’s not what you think

I’ve been feeling really down today. I took a break from computers and working on projects, and about 18 hours later I was hit with this overwhelming feeling that I’m just an average person who can’t let go of his own mediocrity.

Thinking about using a computer right now actually makes me feel sick
