be useful in conversations. It may also help me understand the issues my students are having learning a new language. The world seems a chaotic place these days and it feels like there is little that can be done as an individual. Balakun has been giving me an opportunity to meet people from around

Yhe world, to help people in a war-torn nation fighting for it’s survival, and to give them a break from day to day horrors. I strongly recommend Balakun to anyone who wants to help the Ukrainian people. (Tell 'em wizzard sent you!)

read this far and think this sounds interesting, consider filling out the application mentor on the home page of the link above. It’s simple and asks only a few questions. Shortly after, you will have an online face to face verification interview that will help Balakun match you with a student.

(There is also a need for behind the scenes volunteers who want to help but don’t want to teach students directly.) I don’t speak or read Ukrainian but I AM beginning lessons with a group of other mentors in a couple weeks. I doubt I’ll ever be fluent, but I hope to pick up a few words that will

the Balakun web site to  help make lessons to expand my student’s vocabulary. I attend speaking clubs where teachers lead lessons to interested groups of students and teachers.  I use them to help me better teach my students and I pick up tips frequently. There are groups where mentors and mentees

can hang out and chat about their English lessons or bounce through any topics that people raise. I often have long conversations with 5 or 6 others, each of us in a different country and time-zone. Balkun is growing rapidly and is getting more students and needs to find more Mentors. If you’ve

From their site: “Balakun is a bridge between passionate volunteer mentors from around the world and Ukrainians eager to learn or practice English, German, and Spanish, or any other language, creating space for shared learning, conversation, and the exchange of experience.” As a Mentor, I currently

have 2 mentees that I meet with online each week. We talk and listen to each other, mostly in English. We read stories and discuss words that are new or unknown. I taught physics and mathematics for 15 years in earlier days, but this is my first experience as an english teacher. I use resources on

April showers bring May flowers... April is nearly over and rain is brewing overhead. Around our home, the flowers of May have been popping up everywhere. Here are a few.

I'm loving the Iranian Lego videos slamming our moron-in-chief, but I think they need to come out with a line of physical Lego trump figures and military props so we can all join in with mocking this petulant child. Anyone got a contact in the Iranian propaganda division to pass this idea to?

A couple days ago and hummingbird found its way into our greenhouse but couldn't find its way out. I put a couple hummer feeders near an open window and by the large open door, but when I went back hours later at night it was still there. Couldn't figure out how to free #hummingbird #wildlife

It just kept flying back and forth. In the early morning I went to look for it and found it on a branch of a nasturtium plant, ib the semi comma as they do at night. I cut the branch off and carried it to a heating pad on the back deck. After a few minutes, it started moving slightly and #rescue

I saw it breathing. After lightly stroking it, it flew off! Yea! I'm hoping it recovered completely and I added a hole to the side of the greenhouse high up where I think future trapped birds can find the outlet.

April showers have been racing through Northern California with a vengeance for the last week or so, watering the hundreds of plants I've been putting into our raised beds, cloth bags and cardboard boxes during the record breakingly warm spring weather this year! #garden #food

I've already pulled radishes out of the ground and picked a handful of snap peas from 8 foot tall vines in our greenhouse. A dozen summer squashes are nearly big enough to eat, cucumbers are climbing the trellises I set up this year, and some of the corn stalks are

I've not updated the site for a couple years and never really put any effort into making it accessible to mobile so have decided to let it pass into history. To the dozen or so people who follow me and actually see this post: stop by in the next day or 2 or never again. A couple of the thousands

Bottom line: I'm retiring my personal website, wizzard.com, tomorrow after 3 decades and more than a million visitors. (If you want to visit, a screen bigger than your phone is suggested.) ****** The longer version follows here: 30+ years ago, in a down stairs store in Palo Alto, CA we were

introducing the internet to people who were often seeing the web for the first time. I was designing customer webpages that you would laugh at today. By the end of 1994, the internet hosted 2738 web sites. In 1995, when Amazon and AltaVista were started I also started my own site when the number

of web sites was around 25,000. Today the number is ~1.1 billion. This is all preamble to the topic of my post today. In the next 2 days I'm shutting my site down after 30+ years & over a million visitors. Wizzard.com is entirely a vanity site I've been using to show off my art and ramblings

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Americans or others who celebrate it! My wife and I dropped off small gifts to our favorite farmer yesterday and he loaded us up with veggies from his greenhouse. As in the past he also used the occasion of our visit to trim off some #food #Thanksgiving

of the excess persimmon branches on his huge tree to give us some of my favorite fruit! I'm thankful for many things including friends and to be living in a land that grows food in such abundance. #food #fruit #thanks

Glass Maps 21: 99.9% done This is the second to last update in this chapter of the building of glass world maps. (I've already printed a smaller map for the next chapter.) Yea; after many delays, re-gluing Hawaii 2 times when I'd bump it trying to clean the map, similar issues #art #sculpture

with the Aleutians, & lots of cleaning. it's finally sealed into its box of glass! It is still horizontal on the table as I'm letting the glue harden for several days before standing it up to finish the last task of cleaning the excess glue from sealing it up. That will take a #art #sculpture

week or so. Silicone glue forms a skin quickly, but takes a while to completely cure. I'll have to scrape it away a couple times before I'm satisfied its done. The next and last update will show the finished piece standing up with as much light shining through as I can manage. #art #sculpture

Glass Maps 19:the Reveal My wife & I bundled up Map B and drove it to Galena, Illinois where we met my brother & his wife who came from the Philadelphia area. My other brother joined us from Michigan. Shortly after we moved our suitcases into a B&B, my brothers brought #Art #Sculpture

My brother and his wife are having a Reveal party for their friends in its new home in their home in Pennsylvania. After their ceremony, I'll surely share photos. Coming up in a couple weeks I think.

Art tour continued. As we left House of Balls (see previous post), Allen's wife told us we should visit another outdoor art sculpture nearby in St. Paul, MN. Raspberry Island Park features #sculpture #art

a few dozen imaginary animals from several Hispanic artists next to the (Mississippi?) river in beautiful grassy Park. Each was surrounded by a rope perimeter that was also landscaped with #art #sculpture

filled with hundreds of art pieces and seeing everything in the 2 hours we spent with Allen would be impossible. The kinda place that you see something new every time you look again. An added bonus was that it #art #sculpture #travel

is his birthday today and he was feeling down and he thanked us for lifting his mood. Nice guy and fellow burner and I wish his gallery was a thousand miles closer to our home. Happy Birthday Allen! #art #sculpture

balls I later learned). Minneapolis was still ahead of us but 100 miles out of the way, but what's a meer 100 miles for someone I HAD TO SEE. Worth every mile! I will recommend it to anyone who loves wacky sculpture. The place isn't huge but is big enough to be #art #sculpture
