The social/privacy stuff is a bit clunky. The design is, let's say, 'slop-forward'. But the core is there.

Strange days. You have to wonder how wormy a worm an AI could make, if it really put its mind to it. I imagine we will find out sooner rather than later.

Has anyone written an article about the rise of the "organise some stuff" videogame genre in the age of AI anxiety? I feel like someone should have.

"what if i felt like my small contributions and individual decisions built toward a larger project of which I felt some form of ownership lol"

Occasionally I would like to remind people that I wrote a whole book about this. Intelligence is multiple, embodied, and relational, and what matters is different intelligences working together for mutual flourishing.

It's important to remember that the AI doom scenario assumes not only that intelligence is a single well-defined thing, but also that intelligence solves literally every single problem, and that in every conflict overwhelming intelligence always wins. This is just not how anything works.

Probably the coolest thing he's done next to being a potential Bomberman fan

I had an old project where I tried to find myself on Google Streetview using my Google Location History - kind of a narcissistic attempt to turn the panopticon on itself. It looks for when I was in the same place as the date of a Streetview panorama for that location.

The main improvements were actually just performance - the time required to check for collision massively improved thanks to a far neater/more performant approach for checking locations against Streetview metadata. UI and functionally-wise, it didn't really solve for too much more.

I did find a couple more interesting panoramas, but they are either ones I submitted myself but forgot, where I am not super confident it is me, or where I already knew that there was user-submitted 360 panoramas I was in (at Google I/O, specifically).

I pointed an LLM at it, asked it to review/rewrite/improve as it saw fit. After a pretty scathing review of my code (which, fair), it gave me a UI for navigating it which is useful and fine, if quite ugly, and created a quite silly algorithm to 'help' order the potential 'collisions' by likelihood.

i was fortunate enough to profile Margaret Hamilton in 2019. A really kind and curious person. This was my favorite story she told me:

There is vague idea being pushed around that 'software product' as a thing people would buy is 'dying' and, while it is deeply stupid, it is definitely becoming... something else.

Holy shit. Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt it in Rust and released it as open source. Either all software is dead or the US copyright laws are about to receive an update. getartcraft.com/apps

The 'side-project' and 'side-hustle' subReddits are all people launching their 'gym helper' app and looking for their first customers, all ignoring the 100 previous posts of exactly the same thing, all of them vibe-coded.

What is your group chat named? Ours is a covid-artefact named 'Survival Club', but I am also a proud member of 'Stare at the sun you coward' and 'DRANKS'.

Applied for German citizenship. Now... we wait. Will the UK have rejoined the EU by the time my application is processed? Will the AfD have gained power and rejected my application outright? Either is entirely possible within the time spans that German bureaucracy typically operates.

LLMs are quite good at helping you gain flash/write access to your old hardware (after some minor soldering). Shown here: an early Beeline device jailbroken to accept custom OTAs.

This is the Beeline Velo 1, nearly a decade old. Quite surprised it let me replace the OTA signing key with my own, bypassing OTA update checks.

Plan is to turn it into a magic compass - show the nearest place from a list stored on of Google Maps (with the help of a custom app).

Reminder that both the "mass vaccination = mass death" nutcases, and the "ongoing deadly pandemic" lot are proven wrong every day. Actuaries - whose jobs depend on getting death rates right regularly publish age-standardised mortality rates. Post-pandemic, back to a steady year-on-year improvement.
