The “S” in Ulysses S. Grant Stands for Nothing. #history #civilwar #military www.bobmayer.com/the-s-in-uly...

bobmayer.comThe "S" in Ulysses S. Grant Stands for Nothing - Bob MayerThe man who saved the United States was named U.S. Grant by a clerical error. He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Ohio on April 27, 1822. That was his name for the first seventeen years of his life. In 1839, Congressman Thomas Hamer submitted Grant’s appointment to West Point. Hamer got the name wrong. […]

The Lightning “Crouch” Was Abandoned in 2008 #weather #lightning #survival #disaster #lifehacks www.bobmayer.com/the-lightnin...

bobmayer.comThe Lightning "Crouch" Was Abandoned in 2008 - Bob MayerIf you are caught in the open during a thunderstorm, you have probably been taught to crouch. Balls of the feet, heels together, head down, hands over your ears. The National Weather Service stopped recommending that in 2008. Their finding was blunt: the crouch offers no significant protection. If a lightning channel comes down on […]

What Are The First Five Things You Do in an Emergency? #disaster #emergency #triage #climateaction #survival www.bobmayer.com/the-first-fi...

bobmayer.comThe First Five Things You Do in an Emergency - Bob MayerEvery situation is different, so this is a guideline, not a checklist you follow off a card. But the order matters, and most people get it wrong under stress. First: triage yourself. Breathing. Bleeding. Broken. Are you stabilized? Can you move? That sounds selfish. It isn’t. Remember Breathing, Bleeding, Broken? It’s changed. #firstaid #emergency #survival #health www.bobmayer.com/remember-bre...

bobmayer.comRemember Breathing, Bleeding, Broken? It's changed. Bleeding Goes First - Bob MayerI fact-check my nonfiction books every so often because things change. And this is a big change, but it makes sense. The old way to quickly evaluate someone who was hurt is Breathing, Bleeding, Broken. The Army changed the order. This became MARCH. Breathing, Bleeding, Broken was what I was taught and what generations of […]
