It has been two weeks since the unexpected death of Peer Bork, and all of us in his research group are deeply missing him. His scientific vision brought us together as a team, and we are immensely grateful for the time we spent together. ๐งต
EMBL is deeply saddened by the passing of our Interim Director General Peer Bork, a pioneering scientist who left an indelible imprint on life science research in Europe and beyond.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

We revived one of our longest-running services, PAL2NAL: www.bork.embl.de/pal2nal/ -- converting a protein sequence alignment and the corresponding DNA sequences into a codon alignment. Even after 20 years, it is still being cited hundreds of times a year! scholar.google.com/scholar?cite...
We had to turn it off earlier this year as it was a by-now outdated and insecure Perl script. With Claude's help, we ported it to Python making sure that it produces identical output: github.com/grp-bork/pal...
This morning we remembered four computational biology pioneers, who the world sadly lost over the past year.
Thank you to all speakers for your moving tributes at ECCB.

New preprint from the lab! "Planetary structure and drivers of diazotroph communities reveal key reservoirs of nitrogen-fixation potential"
Nitrogen fixation is scattered right across the prokaryotic tree โ but it's heterotrophs, not cyanobacteria, that dominate the potential. ๐งต

The resource behind it: NFixPlanet, with 48,151 nitrogenase gene sequences from reference genomes, MAGs and metagenomic contigs. HMMs plus operon-level QC pick out complete Mo-, Fe- and V-nitrogenase systems (nifHDK, anfHDK, vnfHDK) and filter out homologs and pseudogenes.

We mapped 9,163 shotgun metagenomes โ an environmentally balanced subset drawn from a pool of 85,604 from our SPIRE spire.embl.de database โ spanning marine, freshwater, terrestrial, anthropogenic and host-associated systems. (2/5)
Freshwater and sediment systems emerge as hotspots of diazotroph diversity and abundance, well beyond the environments that have historically anchored the field. Diazotroph-rich communities track nutrient limitation and carbohydrate-rich metabolic regimes. (3/5)
How can we harness the vast functional diversity of microbes on our planet?
Join us at EMBL Heidelberg from 8โ10 December 2026 to hear about ongoing efforts to decode gene function and organisation in human gut microbes, and to present your own research.

EMBL and partners carried out a new pilot project in Luxembourg to study how freshwater microbiomes respond to environmental change. By sampling rivers and soils along the Moselle and Rhine, researchers aim to provide a way to track ecosystem stress and pollution.

Due to some IT problems, the Bork group homepage and various services such as SPIRE and Metalog are unfortunately going to be unavailable for a couple of days. We're sorry for that and hope that the outage can soon be resolved!
@fullam.bsky.social has pushed a new #GUNC release, v1.1.0:

Latitudinal diversity gradients (LDGs) are found across ๐ฑ๐จ๐ฆ but their underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
In this study, we highlight that LDGs are not universal in marine microbiomes but reflect lineage-specific ecological strategies and environmental responses.
