New article out. First for the latest project on debt default in the Americas.

New article out early on our website from @davidthomson.bsky.social: '“American insecurities”: debt default and foreign banking intervention in antebellum Pennsylvania' - check it via the link below: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Yesterday (16 August) marked a significant anniversary in British & American Nineteenth Century History, the first transatlantic telegraph message sent and received, from Queen Victoria in London to President Buchanan in Bedford Springs, PA (1858)!

Speaking of living history, Bedford Springs has a room named after the white supremacist and slavery-supporting enthusiast James C. Calhoun… Other 19th Century figures who stayed there (Louisa Adams, Harriet Lane, Thaddeus Stevens, members of Lincoln’s cabinet) have not received such honour

Happy 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of the Independence and the spiritual-national founding of the USA 📜🇺🇸🎆 Though perhaps many of you would prefer to go down the rabbit hole and chortle with the Mad Hatter this July 4th (also Alice in Wonderland Day 🐇☕️🎩)

I will hazard to add that, while signed in 1776, we Nineteenth Century Historians can claim the Declaration as fought over and reinterpreted as a liberatory document (read the Declaration of Sentiments or Frederick Douglass’s "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" Speech) in the long 19th!!!
