Colored pencil drawing of a prehistoric woman butchering an antelope she has hunted. The inspiration for this came from memories of the villagers hunting and butchering antelope in the first Age of Empires game. #prehistoric #paleolithic #african #art

Shaded them in with good ol' pencil. #fantasy #dinosaur #african #blackwoman #art

Rough sketch in pencil of a woman with a spear fighting a raptor (or "hookfoot" as her people would call it due to the hooked talons on its feet). Undecided whether to render it with simple graphite or with colored pencil. #fantasy #dinosaur #blackwoman #sketch #art

Someone emailed me an offer to do a Zoom Q&A about one of my books for my book club. I gave them a time I would be available, and then they started asking me for a "contribution". Needless to say, that was when I high-tailed out of that conversation.

Should I get off Twitter? There are some people on there I like following, and I can avoid most of the garbage on that site if I stick to the “Following” feed. On the other hand, Elon Musk is not someone I want to support. I certainly don’t want to give him a cent of my money.

I normally stay away from "Hellaverse redesign" content, given that a lot of it seems to be rooted in this crusade of forced hate against the creator. But I do think Adam and Lilith could be redesigned to better resemble the actual first human beings (both arts are mine).

I should point out BTW that I actually like Hazbin Hotel as a show (I am less invested in Helluva Boss due to it having become too soap-operaish for my taste). And I find the whole hatedom against Vivziepop obnoxious. So I don't mean to dunk on her.

I know there's a history in European art of depicting biblical figures as, well, European, and I assume that that's why they're portrayed as White in Viv's art style. But, at the same time, I really wish more media acknowledged humanity's roots in Africa.

Also, I prefer the hairstyle Alastor had as a human than the one his Sinner form has. It looks more like something a man of African-American ancestry would have worn back in his time on Earth.

Portrait of Torosaurus alongside a (proto-)Heliconia plant. I found out after doodling this that Heliconia is thought to date back to the Eocene, but who knows, maybe they had ancestors in the Late Cretaceous when Torosaurus was around. #dinosaur #prehistoric #paleoart #art

I definitely believe female humans were hunting in the Paleolithic more often than some people assume. I would be interested in knowing why chimps and bonobos differ in this aspect despite having similar anatomy and sexual dimorphism.

Caroline VanSickle (she/her)@cvansickle.bsky.social

Which sex does most of the hunting differs between chimps and bonobos, who are skeletally similar. Seems like skeletal anatomy cannot predict whether/how sex relates to hunting in our closest living relatives. Remind me why we think we can predict sex based hunting behaviors in fossil hominins?

Gave them a background. Designing the architecture was a fun challenge. #fantasy #worldbuilding #interracial #romance #art

I wanted to indulge in my steamy side again, so here's a Northislander man and a Sunblessed woman from my newest fantasy setting in an amorous moment. I might draw a more detailed background for this couple when I have more time. #fantasy #interracial #couple #love #art

Three pixel-art horror movie posters I designed for a few pixel art jams in the GameGen program, going with the month's Halloween theme. I think "Mummy Love" is my favorite simply because of how romantic it is. #pixelart #art #halloween #egyptian #mummy

Got what is hopefully the final proof copy of Alani: Citadel of Swords! More than 200 pages of s&s goodness! Swords! Weird sorcery! Wuxia stuff! Intrigue! Monsters! Lizard chariot races!

A "mood board" I put together showing some of the influences I want to incorporate when I design the architecture of my fictional "Sunblessed" culture. #fantasy #worldbuilding #african #architecture #moodboard

In this world, all magic ultimately comes from the sun. The Northislanders extract their magic from a special sun-enriched type of ore called sunstone whereas the Sunblessed channel it directly from the sun.

A splendorous fantasy queen reclining seductively. No world built for her yet, but these kinds of fantasy doodles can be fun since you don't have to worry as much about historical or scientific accuracy. #fantasy #characterdesign #african #blackwoman #art

If the weird hatedoms Vivziepop and Gooseworx have attracted are any indication, fame can be a double-edged sword even if you're an indie creator. And especially if you got big on Tumblr with all the catty trolls on it.

5 years ago I sketched out first draft of characters of my #comic... We can see prototypes for #Cuauhtli (who was supposed to be jaguar warrior!), I'Bana, Ome Coatl (sorcerer) and Kan Ma'ax. #art #fantasy #Aztec

A colored-pencil character design for a fantasy priestess or mage who serves a deity of light. I have to say that I like how the gloss on her skin came out! #fantasy #characterdesign #african #blackwoman #art

One more diorama for the week! This one depicts a prehistoric South American warrior with his loyal Smilodon populator by his side. I made the warrior myself using my clay, but I got the Smilodon figure from Hobby Lobby. #prehistoric #southamerican #diorama

When I was a kid, I always imagined Megatherium frolicking in snowy habitats alongside woolly mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and Neanderthals, but then I learned that it was restricted to South America. Ah, shucks.

A clay sculpture of a Moorish bellydancer. Honestly, this was a nightmare to hold together since the sculpture broke apart at the waist. Thank goodness for superglue! #moorish #african #bellydancer #claysculpture #art

A humble medieval peasant has chanced upon the lamp of a Moorish genie who promises him three wishes! Actually an illustration to go with another upcoming story of mine... #moorish #genie #medieval #fantasy #art

Anyone else think black separatists, misandrists, etc. are kinda like those autistic people who think they're superior to non-autistics? They all hate people for being born into a group considered more privileged than them, which IMO is always cringe.

I might benefit from White privilege in a way a non-autistic Black person wouldn't, but they in turn benefit would from non-autistic privilege. The truth is that we all benefit from one form of privilege or another, just as we all lack privilege in other ways.

Scribbled out another story after work yesterday. This one is a fairytale-ish fantasy about a medieval peasant who finds a Moorish genie in a lamp that can grant him three wishes, and he has to keep her out of the hands of his oppressive lord. Word count is 3.6K as of this draft. #writing
