The important thing here was the essence of my experience in nature. In short - I went out and had a great time and felt like I made deep connections with it. Making a photo is cool, doing well in a contest is cool, but they are just the icing on top of the cake. And cake rules.

- there is some truly stunning nature photography on the results page, and we all know it's legit because of the NLPA's rigorous raw verification process. This photo's placement in the contest makes its name even more apropos. It was made on my last day in the Mojave desert with some of the most...

gorgeous conditions I've ever seen. After a cold and rainy night camping (not common conditions in the desert), I woke up to a freezing fog covering everything as far as I could see with frost and snow. I was completely alone and shared the experience with no one.

This photo received the "Runner Up" distinction in the "Intimate Landscape" category of the 2026 NLPA. A huge honor! Thanks to all the founders and judges that put in a ton of time and effort to make it happen, and congrats to the other winners -

"I'm Not Sure How" One of my favorite things about backpacking is that once you've started, you can't really give up. On this one, I weathered a storm and witnessed a rainbow forming atop the trees at the bottom of the valley. It was a beautiful moment I am very grateful to have witnessed.

"Stonework" This one was taken at the terminus of a grueling out-and-back day hike up into the mountains in the pouring rain. I didn't get any nice photos of the mountains that day, but the colorful, wet ground was looking great! It's worth going out into any conditions with an open mind.

"Post-Rain Rewards" ‣ Collection: 2025: Appalachian Spring ‣ Published: Sept. 2025 I was disappointed to see a rainbow and some beautiful light but not be able to photograph it before it faded away. Then I waited a couple of hours and this happened ¯\(ツ)/¯

"How to Explain" I feel lucky to have made this shot; I saw this light out of the corner of my while walking through a quiet forest. I took a couple of focus stacks, and the light was gone before I knew it. I am no stranger to quickly fleeting light, but I was not expecting it midday in a forest!

This is a fantastic ultrawide composition! I really enjoy the way the river lines up with the path, and how the curve of the path fits in the bottom of the frame just right. The light on the mountains and the sky ain't hurtin' neither. #recommendation

"Worth It" 2024 New photos and writing coming soon - subscribe to my newsletter to see! It's a collection of photos I made while backpacking in some canyons with Eric Bennett. We ended up having quite an adventure. I wrote a journal about it, in case you're curious about our gnarly adventures.

#stream_of_consciousness 2025-03-04 I took this photo in White Sands National *Monument* in 2017 (it became a park in 2019). I never really did anything with it but now I think it's a perfect candidate for this project. I still enjoy it after 8 years, which I can't say about all of my old work!

I was interviewed again on We Talk Photo! It's always an honor to chat about nature photography and creativity for a podcast.
