This is literally the end of the rule of law. If a President can pardon people committing crimes on his behalf - and the Supreme Court says he himself can't be prosecuted for crimes committed as part of his job - then the government becomes a lawless entity able to violate our rights without limit.

During Prohibition, August Busch discovered that US government-owned ships were selling booze at sea. The resulting scandal was bungled so badly by the Harding admin, it exacerbated a Republican blowout in the 1922 midterms. It's on my mind for some reason. brewedculture.org/2026/10/22/w...

I was quite the ME fiend once upon a time, then 3 really shook my enthusiasm. Andromeda killed it entirely (didn't even bother with the game). Sad to see the next one die like this. So it goes.

The midterms had me obsessing about an old project, so I dusted it off and wrote a blog post about it (had to dust that off, too). A badly-handled media spat over drinking at sea helped Republicans lose big in the 1922 midterms. And the whole saga rings familiar. brewedculture.org/2026/10/22/w...

If you're within 50 miles of this book talk, get on it! This book is engaging, solid, and amazing. And it really has been years. Here's Jennifer talking about Wisconsin women hop pickers in 2019 for the first Beer Culture Summit, at Metropolitan Brewing in Chicago! (talk about beer ghosts...😢)

On this day in 1814, the London Beer Flood occurred, when a 22 foot tall wooden tank of fermenting porter burst, releasing a valve on another tank releasing 580,000–1,470,000 L; 154,000–388,000 US gal. of beer, making a wave which smashed through the back wall of the Horseshoe Brewery, killing 8.

Thinking still more about the AI booster discourse that tries to undermine critical work on the topic by saying "They don't even use it, how can they possibly know what they're talking about." >>

Still the best Bond movie (though Casino Royale is just a nose behind)

I saw Goldeneye for the first time last night and I swear to God that was far and away the best Bond movie I’ve ever seen, people’s fondness for this isn’t just nostalgia

It was a great honor and a lot of fun to sit down with Blanca for this episode of the United States at 250 to talk about the founding generation, how historians can tell complicated stories in the digital age, and the work that remains to be done.

As part the special class and lecture series on the US 250th I'm co-teaching this semester, my students are creating a podcast of interviews with our guest lecturers (I'll also be sharing the audio of their lectures). Our 1st episode just dropped, featuring an interview with @jimambuske.bsky.social!

Amazing. And if a movie had depicted reentry like this, we'd have probably said it looked unrealistic.

NASA has released onboard video of Artemis II's reentry through Earth's atmosphere 🤩 Top speed: about 25,000 mph

On a related note: who wrote *the* history of first-wave hipsterism in Williamsburg/Portland/etc.? Somebody must have done that book, right? What is it?

SOURCE CALL: I'm looking to interview with folks who sold PBR (either as an employee of Pabst Brewing Co., or one of its distributors or retail accounts) in the early Aughts. If that's you or someone you know, please get in touch. Email dave@dinfontay.com or text dinfontay.11 on Signal.

Tickled that a major cause of the (friendly!) debate in this thread is that Americans insisted on pigeonholing the definition of Märzen for decades to prop up outdated Oktoberfest recipes, then had to invent/pigeonhole a different style to try and back out of it. It's a ludicrous mess and I love it.

I am calling for a moratorium on American breweries making Märzen but calling it Festbier. They are two completely different things!!

Oktoberfestbier on the Wiesn evolved for its own reasons, but the way global understandings of Oktoberfest (and its beer) developed is a fascinating story with a life of its own, revolving around business, ethnicity, culture, and international politics. Very little to do with the brew kettle.

The government *still* isn’t tracking how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens. We are. 500+ Americans have been handcuffed, held at gunpoint or held against their will in Trump’s second term. Our tally is almost certainly an undercount. THREAD (content warning: violence) ⬇️

Every history grad program should be operating a series like these with the local community. It's great experience for grad students and the community is INTERESTED! Not a hard lift (or cost) for a grad student association. I started Purdue's in 2017 and it's still going.

I know it's currently the final days of September, but breweries in 2026 should not be starting off their email newsletter with "The final days." Turns out I can get really sad before I get to the fifth word of a sentence.
