I could note numerous problems with the State Department video, but here's an easy one: the painting showing Washington supposedly praying at Valley Forge is based on a myth (& one that promoted religious bigotry, not religious freedom): publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/the-trump-...

CT has updated our story w/ a note about Marshall appearing on stage at a CREC congregation, pastored by Kyle Lammott, and that links to @briankaylor.bsky.social's coverage. Also, I followed-up with Lammott about this. Thanks again, Brian & @jackjenkins.me. www.christianitytoday.com/2026/10/midt...
CREC pastor told CT he wasn't interested in putting Sen. Marshall on stage at church & telling people to vote for him, but Marshall was literally on stage Sunday night at that church! My report on service (publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/sunday-nig...) is quite the chaser to this shot from Liam:

“I understand that if you’re against Adam Hamilton, then you’re hoping Roger Marshall wins. Of course, I’m going to vote for the guy,” Lammott said. “I’m just not interested in putting a candidate on stage during a Sunday service and saying, ‘Hey, here’s our guy.’” (2/2)
ICYMI: Sen. Roger Marshall & other GOP officials in Kansas attended a partisan church service Sunday night focused on attacking the faith of Marshall's opponent, Rev. Adam Hamilton. I've written the only report on the event: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/sunday-nig...

As the Sunday night service relitigated the Fundamentalist-Modernist Controversy of the last century, rightwing evangelical preachers called on Roger Marshall’s Democratic opponent, Rev. Adam Hamilton, to repent — while also praising President Donald Trump.
My report on a Sunday evening rally at church in Wichita that featured GOP candidates & lots of rightwing preachers attacking faith of Rev. Adam Hamilton (while also supporting Trump): publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/sunday-nig...
I've watched lots of prayers at Trump rallies (& wrote about them in 2024: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/prayers-of...) so it's surprising to see Catholic priest (albeit retired) pray at rally in Florida today. Usually evangelical or Pentecostal pastor (or politician). As usual, prayer was partisan
As usual, I was only reporter to watch & report yesterday on Hegseth's monthly worship service at the Pentagon: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/hegseths-p... Such #ChristianNationalism deserves more attention, so subscribe to A Public Witness to find coverage you won't find elsewhere!
Episcopal Bishop Mark Edington of the American Cathedral in Paris criticized "how little the vice president knows about France" in Sunday's service after J.D. Vance blamed immigration for unrest in France. Edington also defended concerns of students protesting & criticized "idolatry" of AI companies

Today's Pentagon worship service marked the fourth time in 18 monthly services that the sermon was preached by Brooks Potteiger, a member of Doug Wilson's denomination who leads a new church plant in Washington, D.C., that Pete Hegseth often attends.
I actually looked at some partisan data related to UMC split. UMC is still more bipartisan (aka includes the middle) than those who split off: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/what-congr... It's bizarre for Marshall to say the actions of an extreme faction leaving means the middle isn't the middle.

"Providence" is the elastic doctrine of choice for sanctifying all kinds of crimes. Lots of good theological work on this from many folks, chief among them Willie Jennings. Also MAtt Jantzen's excellent "God, Race, and History," plus a book called "Our Trespasses" written by little old me.

My thoughts on the upside-down rally in Kansas last night as Donald Trump attacked Rev. Adam Hamilton: wordandway.org/2026/10/20/a...
Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas says a lot of dumb & inaccurate things, but this one's wild: Adam Hamilton's "the reason that the Methodist Church split." Hamilton actually tried to prevent a split (see: flatlandkc.org/news-issues/... & baptistnews.com/article/eigh...)
@apnews.com has piece on "House Speaker Mike Johnson draws on faith as he fights to hold the Republican majority" but never actually mentions he's Southern Baptist. Just a generic Christian faith. Oddly, article does mention denominational affiliation of 3 past speakers. apnews.com/article/hous...
You cannot really understand Mike Johnson's faith without grounding it in the modern Southern Baptist Convention & his #ChristianNationalism. Because all of that tells us a lot about his faith today: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/christian-...
Also, this bit in @apnews.com piece is misleading: "Two former speakers, Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich are Catholics, as is John Boehner, who invited Pope Francis to address Congress." Gingrich was actually Southern Baptist when he was speaker. He didn't convert to Catholicism until later.
Great reporting here that makes the viral slap down even better. Not a random person but a Christian Nationalist activist. Guy thought he was going to get El-Sayed but instead got rhetorically demolished. Love to see it.
SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.
During enlistment oath ceremony in Tennessee as part of so-called "Send Me Tour," Hegseth suggests they're taking oath to serve God & country. Sadly, his #ChristianNationalism isn't surprising as he previously said dying for country earns eternal life: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/at-nationa...
At "Send Me Tour" in Tennessee, Hegseth says of military members: "We all wear the same uniform & the same patch because we serve the same God & the same country." No, joining military doesn't mean serving God. But that fits his misuse of Isaiah verse: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/hegseth-co...
Hegseth will be at the University of Tennessee tomorrow for the next stop in his "Send Me" tour, in which he conscripts Isaiah 6:8 as if the call of a prophet is instead just a military recruitment meme. This is the Bible verse he has most misused: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/hegseth-co...

We don’t yet know the full extent of DHS’s spying on churches. Just this week, a document revealed another time when an undercover agent went inside an Episcopal Church in St. Paul. It’s highly possible that additional incidents at other churches occurred but have not been made public yet.
Trump vetoes Hegseth's plan to livestream firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan. That's how extreme Hegseth is, with even Trump balking. But his bloodlust for public execution is popular with those in his denomination (which was started by Doug Wilson): publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/planned-pu...

Hegseth & Trump are immoral. And Biden could've prevented this. While he commuted most federal death sentences before leaving office, he didn't for those on military death row (www.cityviewnc.com/stories/pres...). Biden could've disarmed an immoral administration but did too little on his way out.

The last public execution in America was in 1936. A young black man in Kentucky was hanged by a drunk executioner; a news story said "They Ate Hotdogs While a Man Died." Was such an embarrassment that the governor outlawed it 18 months later www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
This week, city council meetings in Washington & Iowa opened with "Hail Satan" invocations from The Satanic Temple. Why did these prayers occur? Because Christian Nationalist council members decided to inject prayer into gov't meetings. That backfired! publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/christian-...

Like a Wile E. Coyote plan thwarted by the Road Runner, the first invocation under a new policy to start official city council meetings with a prayer came not from a Christian but from someone with The Satanic Temple.
1st US military execution since WWII by firing squad will be on Dec. 3. Not sure what it is about rightwing Christian politicians killing people during Advent, but some governors have done it as well (publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/christmas-...).
