Saw YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING last night and I'm still reeling from the twist that Elizabeth Holmes is a Brewers fan.

@robertloerzel.bsky.social Heya! I've been working on a bit of an Uptown Theater-related mystery for a little while regarding a piece of tape up in the projection room, if you're alright with it, is there a good place to message ya? I'd love to see if your research cropped up anything that'd help!

For decades I've been obsessed with the Balaban & Katz movie palaces of the 1920s, and today I got to experience a dream I've been waiting for since the day I moved to Chicago, a chance to tour the Uptown Theater. I've been all over the world and not sure I've seen something so personally grand.

A story I've told many times, but when I first saw Mike Ditka, I was biking down Damen and saw an event at the Vienna Hot Dog Factory parking lot. He was alone, just napping underneath this tent after promoting his line of hot dogs and at that moment I just felt, oh, hey, now I'm truly from Chicago.

Headed back to Wisconsin to see the kiddos and parents, snuck out for a night to Minneapolis and took my mom to see David Strathairn perform Waiting For Godot.

I've read Beckett but this was my first performance, and it was a perfect introduction. It's accessible but uncompromising in a way that really invites newcomers to appreciate its themes. I'll never forget being able to see Strathairn, but Jimmy Kieffer stepping in so quick, he was a powerhouse.

I absolutely loved the consideration of the lighting and sound design. Both acts had these great significant yet subtle day/night cycles, during dusk they'd play an accurately annoying but not distracting cicada loop, but everything was targeted to the performance.

Just fucking fucking sucks when my mom, both of us traumatized by sexual abuse for years, wants to relax and watch a game with me, but it's fuckin Deshaun and the night turns into talking about what he's done and how ridiculous it is that he's on the field. An absolute institutional fucking failure.

Little late because of a wild night but it's the 10th anniversary of the death of Jose Fernandez. Been a Marlins fan since day one, I was at the very first game. Having a team in my hometown was such a moment. Moving overseas made it hard, but I fell in love with baseball.

10 years on, the Marlins haven't given him any sort of memorial, no statue, no section, just a small unnamed plaque where the Miami and Cuban community congregated to tribute him after his death. But he meant a lot to me, and I want him to be remembered. Today's Jose Day. And he meant a lot to us.

The day after, I was at a @bitbashchicago.com meeting, watching the game on my iPad. I cried during the intro, during the mound tribute, and then Dee came at bat. He took Jose's batting box and stance for the first pitch, and then, for his only one that season, sent it deep right. Home run. I broke.

I'm not a celebrity person, but what Jose brought to the game, just to transform it into a place where people can celebrate their accomplishments, that can defy this racist lousy old school way of thinking, he was so fun, man. I was a fan. I was his fan.

The Marlins are always a team that's hard to love, but when Jose showed up while I was in college, it was a shot of adrenaline. He was fun, he loved playing, and he didn't care who didn't like who showed it. Ioved it, it felt new, it felt like a shift in baseball. He was lightning.

I remember the morning he died. I'd just survived a brutal incident a couple years ago, and while I know he made mistakes, it was the same mistakes I'd made, and now he paid for them in a way nobody deserved. For Miami, the local Cuban community, for the Marlins, I was heartbroken.

One of my favorites of the year.

There are currently no active conversations for a full ‘MUPPET SHOW’ series revival. Disney, The Muppets Studio and Point Grey Pictures have had difficulties with deciding on a premise for the series that they can all agree on. (Source: Deadline)

went to a friend's wedding tonight where their RSVP had a "say something nice about the happy couple!" text box and i thought it was just a tacky bit of a generic wedding rsvp form they used but you couldn't skip it so... well... they get up for their first dance, and right behind them...

I've got a couple aquariums, nice to have some life around. My biggest trouble was this angelfish I named Big Dumb Jerk. He was territorial, temperamental, and picky. Made it so I couldn't really have any other fish in his tank. After almost 7 years, he died yesterday.

He wasn't what I wanted when I started keeping fish, but I grew attached to him. During the pandemic, he was one of the only living things i'd see. I liked taking care of him. I didn't think I'd ever be a pet person but it's hit hard these past couple days, I really miss him. See ya, BDJ. Love ya.

just thinkin' bout the odyssey and what a killing a theater chain would be makin' if they had a giant 70mm IMAX screen located right in the heart of chicago gosh that sucker would be printing money, you'd hafta be pretty darn incompetent to give somethin' like that up ah well dang, too bad

like gosh can you imagine being a company who has one of the largest IMAX screens in the world on prime real estate right at the forefront of premium format films reaching their peak and like, i dunno, closing it and selling it off to become a shitty tourist trap dang that'd be embarrassing as heck

Been listening to Filmspotting for 20 years, it brought me to loving movies, it brought me to Chicago, there's no program remotely close for people who just want to hear conversations about loving movies and discover new ones. The Family membership is already a steal, this is a must-have.

We've dodged storms, smoke, and extreme heat, but it looks like it's gonna be a pretty chill evening on the river! Come join us!

Bit Bash Chicago@bitbashchicago.com

Wanna play JS Joust on the Chicago River? Maybe with a couple other games & some chill DJs? Good news cuz tomorrow THAT’S HAPPENIN! A Lil Bit JS Joust at the Wild Mile is from 7-11pm on Sat, July 18th. It’s free & your friends will be there (we are your friends!) Info 🔗 bitbashchicago.com

This one's tough because I did see a lot of R rated movies, but they're censored in Singapore so while it might technically be Gladiator or Saving Private Ryan, the first "oh we're gonna watch an R-rated movie" was with my friend Stephen getting our hands on an uncensored bootleg of Jason X.

Patrick Klepek@patrickklepek.bsky.social

Do you remember what *your* first R-rated movie was? I finally asked my mom (I couldn't remember), and she told me it was The Lost Boys when I was roughly the same age as my daughter (about 9). The movie traumatized her more than it did me, apparently
