Film/TV profs, anybody have a PDF of really basic intro to adaptation studies? One that introduces key terms like canon and fidelity on a really basic level?

Hey folks, it’s Tuesday the 13, sorry about the date mixup!

Join us for our first event of the year, a talk with Henry Jenkins and Robert Kozinets about their book series, Frames of Fandom, on Tues, Oct. 16 at 9am/12pm/5pm. Register here: tinyurl.com/faasframesev.... A Zoom link will be emailed to you prior to the event.

My upper division undergrads wrote their own grade requirements and expectations for the semester, and, wow, they're a lot tougher than mine would have been! I expected this to be their chance to cut themselves slack...

This just reiterates what five years of experimenting with alternative grading have consistently shown me: students demand a lot of themselves and usually underrate their own performances.

I’m so worried that Canadians are going to start wearing “Yes, all Americans” t-shirts that the last time I went to Windsor, when the guard gave back our passports, I yelled, “I support Canadian sovereignty!”

On July 8th, we published a piece on AI in Heated Rivalry fic fandom. On July 30th, the New York Times ran a piece on the same subject. We weren't surprised—because we knew a Times reporter had read our coverage. A tale of two fandom articles, part of a longstanding dynamic in the media industry:

Every doctor's office: Your blood pressure is a little high. Me, every time: That's because I had to fill out a bunch of forms designed by cishet people to be as non-inclusive and invasive as possible before you checked it.

My chapter is about how students can easily think about and write about AI in film/media. The book has lots of short gems!

It's syllabi season, so let me point you to Writing About Screen Media, 2nd edition: short, hands-on essays about teaching students to analyze a wide array of media. I wrote about my use of ArcGIS Storymaps to make my Comic-Con research more tangible. www.writingaboutscreenmedia.net

A question from Reddit that I'll answer here: "What's the most unhinged thing a doctor has said to you with a straight face?"

On the radio today, there was big to-do about how Spain is so ecstatic bc they’ve only won the World Cup one other time, and it was ages ago. My friends, you won last time. In 2023. You are the reigning champions. Why are we disavowing women’s sports?

We have found the only dog in the US who enjoys today.

In calendar year 2026, I have been asked to review a book proposal, two book manuscripts, four journal articles, and a tenure case. It is June. Some of you aren’t pulling your weight.

If you're worried about the environmental footprint of using AI, I can give you my dad's phone number, and you can text him random questions. He texts back answers. Comes with the same caveat that answers may or may not be correct.
