Rest in peace Walter Koenig, thank you for Wrath of Khan and so much more!

George Takei@georgetakei.bsky.social

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

DUH. I've been saying this for years. But does The New Yorker call me? Nope.

Apple TV is home to “Severance” and “Ted Lasso.” But our critic thinks this underrated program is the streaming site’s best offering by a mile. www.newyorker.com/culture/on-t...

Tonight I had a reminder that I am human, & I have human moments, & some people will not grant me grace when I have those moments. And I need to not let those people bother me, & perhaps not give them future opportunities to be graceless towards me. Because I will always be human and in need of it

Kirk & Rob, you're still cool (esp Rob, cuz he's the coolest!) but seriously, GET YER BOY IN LINE. He doesn't need to be saying dumb shit like that on stage. Free speech is free speech for all, even for bands, artists, and people who like metal shows

List of schmucks in Metallica who clearly have no idea what they've been singing about for all these years: James Hetfield, and let's be honest, probably Lars Ulrich too.

Rosalia gave a stunning vocal performance on SNL over the weekend. It would have been nice if she had at least some form of live band, even if the orchestra she's been touring with is impossible. Also would have been nice if she didn't have to share the night with lowlife no talent Shane Gillis

I don't understand why SNL would even give Shane Gillis a platform. Rosalia should have just hosted the episode. That guy has no business being on network television, or anywhere really. He is not funny at all. And an offensive moron

Extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Charles Ellerbe, one half of the most underrated guitar section of all time

Nate Chinen@natechinen.bsky.social

RIP Charles Ellerbe, an essential live wire in Prime Time. Here is a definitive obituary, by Shaun Brady. (I learned a thing or two editing this, and I bet you'll do the same reading it.) 🎸

Threads is still trash, but I must admit it has been winning me over lately. The discourse on Lanterns in particular has been superb over there, not to mention Ted Lasso, A Different World, and others. Would love to see more diversity in topics, shows & otherwise over here

And I would think that more diversity in PEOPLE on Bluesky would help lead to that. They're saying that the Lanterns discussions are being led by an exodus of BlackTwitter users onto threads, and that makes sense

All of that being said, Threads is still an algorithmic nightmare, full of cacophonous noise. I'm prob just getting the Lanterns stuff both because I follow James Gunn, & also because I keep clicking on those threads. BlueSky still wins for many reasons, but there's always room for improvement!

A fantastic piece on a fantastic show. When people denigrate my, ahem, “interests” in genre fiction (super hero, horror, fantasy, sci fi) it shows how ignorant they are of what the best in genre has to offer. And Lanterns was one of the best. Hopefully the studios get it & give us more like this

Wrote a little something for NPR on tonight's season finale for HBO's Lanterns, which delivered a different kind of superhero story right up to its last episode -- showing the industry how to reinvent the genre in the process. READ: https://loom.ly/VJNFMbM

Lanterns was 8 episodes of just superb television. The last episode felt melancholy for various reasons, but that includes the fact that this brilliant show is over for now. Please renew and let’s get s2 ASAP. GL John Stewart now & forever FTW

Stevie Wonder released 4 previously unheard tracks from Songs in the Key of Life today, and yes, Stevie's rejected tracks from this period are superior to some artists' entire catalogs. Thank you Stevie, can't wait to hear more. Carry on then.

Infuriating. Please read and channel that rage towards change and ending this madness.

Possibly the greatest (& clearest) protest message EVER

Crowds gathered in Dublin to protest Trump’s visit to Ireland, with demonstrators using imagery featuring Trump, Epstein and Netanyahu to voice their criticism Our Irish friends are doing a better job in voicing their displeasure against the corrupt p€do war criminal than some Americans these days.

Clearly these bears are just looking for agents to represent their foray into Hollywood films. Someone needs to set up an all-bear Influencer house as soon as possible to help get these bears the fame and fortune they seek and very well deserve

California has 60,000 black bears, and they are venturing far from their usual remote mountains into suburbs in search of food and shelter. Researchers have found that a warming climate and wildfires may drive bears farther into human habitats. nyti.ms/3UFOpex

I am very grateful to have been born in the mid-70s, into a world where Gloria Steinem, & her compatriots, had already begun making the world a better place. I am also forever grateful for that time she & Jane Fonda baked pies on Colbert, one of the best TV moments EVER. Rest in peace Gloria Steinem

But here we are, and regardless of her views, her talent spoke volumes, and her music greatly moved and influenced me. I am very sad today at the loss of Cassandra Wilson. May she rest in peace

I was hurt and disappointed by this news. But the reality is I never knew her personally. I only know the word on the proverbial jazz streets. And the word was not good. So I like many others, lost interest and moved on. (cont)

Wilson was always rumored to be a challenging person to work with. And when I discovered hew later in life political views, I was aghast. She was a pro-MAGA republican. I could not reconcile this with the same person who sang that amazing version of "Strange Fruit" (cont)
