If you start writing a novel about a middle aged college professor and a problematic student who thinks he is endlessly interesting, a commando squad should crash through your window and taser you.

In the Church Left we gotta beg for forgiveness to God for "that which we have done and that which we have left undone" every week, so that kind of nonsense is highly discouraged. It's not a perspective that is good for the whole Faith of Good Works thing we're going for.

Having just gone through it, a lot that you think about IVF is twenty+ years out of date. They don’t do multiple transfers anymore, they’ve dialed in on appropriate hormones and dosages, the research is in on the cancer risk (no cancer risk)

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Reading a book that is describing childhood disease in the nineteenth century and the lengths medical professionals went through to treat them, despite having no knowledge of their causes. If you think measles is bad, we are not ready for a pertussis or diphtheria outbreak.

Also my largely unvaccinated, premie infant is in the crook of my arm as I write this. She’s not entering a public building until she’s eligible for her two month shots.

My nephew’s school sent a message home to parents asking them to remind their kids to stay inside during recess if it’s raining and not to take their chromebooks and textbooks out in the rain. In case anyone is wondering how it’s going in LA right now.

Nick (derogatory) ✨@slothropsmap.bsky.social

One fun thing about moving to LA from a normal part of the world is that when it rains everyone goes absolutely fucking pants on fire crazy. It’s taken me 30 minutes to drive a mile in what could gratuitously be called a modest sprinkle.

They did this in Afghanistan at the start of Trump 1. And I can't help but have the same feeling here, they are talking down the president from pressing The Funnee Button by giving him something big and flashy as a distraction

🇺🇸🇮🇷💣 CNN: The U.S. military has developed plans to potentially use the “mother of all bombs” (MOAB), its most powerful non-nuclear bomb, against Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear sites, including Pickaxe Mountain, before or after the midterm elections.

As a DC resident I couldn’t agree more. I shouldn’t have to walk by a bunch of armed goobers just to go about my daily business. Especially when said armed goobers aren’t accountable to anyone I vote for. That the armed goobers are mostly very expensively standing around doing nothing is secondary.

Anjali Dayal@anjalikdayal.bsky.social

I don't want to dunk-quote on this person, but actually, this is a perfect illustration of the problem. we can't become accustomed to or expect or concede constant monitoring from armed troops as we go about our business. it should always make us recoil. there's danger in it becoming unremarkable.

On top of all the substantial comments on this list: whoever decided how they were going to record each name and then alphabetize them is insane.

This is one I have a hard time explaining to people: Some very brilliant people have believed some absolute bat shit stuff over the ages. Parsons is a good example here since it sort of hits wild new thing, engineering innovation, with a bunch of deeply weird absolute nonsense.

My cat is going to be so pissed when I get out of the hospital and her dry-food dispenser goes back to its normal schedule and she has to eat the stupid healthy wet food for her main meal.

Sharing and mutual aid are great But a massive part of the trans community and wider leftist counterculture are based on the silent exploitation of people who do remunerative labor and are given negative social clout for making the adaptations necessary to keep their friends alive and housed

I’m currently pregnant and buying all the baby things. I have friends who had a child right around the time the tariffs first went into place. The increase in costs between what they paid and I am now paying is astounding. And baby products aren’t cheap to begin with!

For months, I've called for baby products to be exempt from Trump's tariffs. Secretary Scott Bessent has repeatedly told me they're under consideration, and last week told me to "watch this space" after Xi's visit. Well, we're watching. Families deserve more than lip service.

A lot more people need to think through what a military coup would actually be like. 😬😬

Dr. Samantha Hancox-Li@sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com

and now these trumpheads are crying crocodile tears about the terror they've unleashed on the american body politic. the coup party "party of coups" is having a big sad that their opponents are also now coup-curious. sow the wind, reap the whirlwind. you stupid fucking children.

This article barely scratches the surface of problems for makers of all kinds on Etsy. If you’re going to buy a pattern on Etsy, make sure you check for non-AI images of completed projects from customers in the reviews.

That LA county should be a single administrative district is my most radical political opinion. And yes, it’s partially motivated by a deep hatred of Beverly Hills NIMBYism.

There should not be 88 different cities in Los Angeles county. Abolish Beverly Hills.

For the record I grew up in one of the grey areas on that map, so I know firsthand what it is to be ruled by the LA County Board of Supervisors (mostly fine).

I used to work at a major museum. At our all staff meeting one year the director was talking about attendance, and apparently we had, plus our minus a couple thousand, the exact same number of visitors every year for like fifty years. The ONLY year that was different was the year we had King Tut.

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

Indeed you can see this just by visiting your nearest privately run museum, paying for a ticket, then going to the paid exhibition at a free museum and just…counting the number of people there.

Having a half hour conversation with my wife at too early o’clock on a Sunday morning in which we both ultimately agree that it’s better for people to not be randomly killed. Glad that’s a point we agree on.

Watching Ever After as an adult and, uh, Henry sure does a lot of refusing to listen to Danielle or take her emotions and reactions into account. Sir, shut up and listen to the person who you are claiming to love instead of bulldozing over her.

There’s something about this line of thinking that’s very much like a toddler having a tantrum because their mother offered them spaghetti or unseasoned tofu and broccoli, but they want pizza so they’re not going to eat anything and they’re going to make everyone else miserable, too.

ellie lockhart (she/they)@eleanor.lockhart.contact

Just found out Erin Reed is maintaining - I won’t link it but it’s on her site - a list of electoral campaigns (by Democrats) she actively encourages trans people to abstain from and tell others to abstain from. This is *insane*. This is an active sabotage campaign with no upside.

Incidentally the folk tale about John Henry is basically this, except for tunnel boring. It encapsulates the anxieties of the blue collar worker, but it’s also wrong about the merits of automation.

Sky Marchini@sky.skymarchini.net

People are getting mad at Isaiah about this - “why do you have to work so fast?” - but like if my employer is paying me to frame houses, and I can frame a wall a day with a hammer or 10 walls a day with a nail gun, it’s pretty obvious which tool they’re gonna require me to use

I ordered something perishable for a dear friend whose father passed earlier this week. Unfortunately it needed to go to small town Iowa within 48 hours, and apparently FedEx can’t accomplish that, as we’re now over 5 hours past that window and it’s still not there. 😒

The group chat has apparently been converted into a hot Spaniards appreciation space, and I’m not sure how we got there, but I’m also not mad.

I’d be about as likely to eat something with a skull and crossbones on it.

I think an interesting measure of RFKJr’s performance is asking “if you see his face next to food, should you eat it?”

also while I'm here, why is it called "Omarchy", is it TRYING to have vibes of a word that only gets used by the kind of scrungly libertarian boys I had the wisdom and clarity to stop dating back in college

This is a really good thread on Emanuel’s worst actions as mayor. But it doesn’t get into all the little things that made him suck as a mayor. Like when he publicly cussed out the leadership of the teachers union for striking. I still can’t believe we re-elected him over Chuy Garcia.

“A random point, if you are still my friend” is honestly the first time I’ve ever related to Kissinger. You asked me to read your draft, please don’t be mad at me. 😭😭

I am very amused by Henry Kissinger's 1965 manuscript review of Schelling's 'Arms and Influence' (sent to Schelling).

There’s at least 14 LEO’s from various agencies across the street from our house right now, clearly trying to get some kind of probable cause to manifest itself so they can get into some guy’s sedan.

Make your favorite film sound as boring as possible without giving away the title: A chief technology officer is worried about keeping his spreadsheets private.

Whole we’re here, the importance of family is the overarching theme in Sinners and it’s what gives the film its structure and elevated it above “vampire film” or “historical drama about racism” and stitched the two parts together.

Silicon Valley raises money on hype and FOMO. This is the same as the self-driving car hype, and crypto/NFT hype, and AI hype. It’s less enticing to put millions into a car/finance/Data/Space company that will maybe revolutionize an industry in 50 years, than in 5 or 10.

Every dude on this site needs to write “I can’t fix her; I won’t stick my dick in crazy” one hundred times on a lined piece of paper.

Was literally in the group chat before bed talking about how disappointed we are with Bass and mocking “large asphalt repair” (aka avoiding compliance with ADA and other laws on a technicality). To think Mike Bonin was bullied off the council by a pack of racist homophobes but she’s still mayor.

The weird thing about working for the National Weather Service is you can pop onto a meeting and say something innocuous like “they keep saying it’s going to rain, but it hasn’t started yet” only to realize you’re meeting with “they.”

There’s a reason the last president to even toy with invading Iran before this one was GWB, and he never got anywhere close to serious about it. And that this one threw the invade Iran Warhawk (Bolton) out of his last administration. If you wanted more proof his brain turned to pudding.

Alistair Davidson@moh-kohn.eurosky.social

You, a genius: "If the US had popular support for a ground invasion, the Iran war would be very different." Me, an idiot: "God that's a lot of big hills are you quite sure?"
