English is way harsher on repetition than Japanese, so part of a light novel translator's job is tweaking the wording so it says the same shit, but without sounding redundant. I thought I'd do a rundown of a few tricks that help with this.

Nia Liston faring better than the previous non-punching episode at least. I'm fairly weary of wannabe rivals but they managed to keep it within the range of cute instead.

It's not actually me that's in love with the phrase 'before his very eyes' it's just that LN authors will not stop reminding us that people are looking at the things we've already established they are looking at

Mary Morstan's Motives Now that Moriarty is officially 'convalescing in the waters at Arima' they're cleaning out his flat, but in the bedroom find a scale model filled with Kyoto landmarks (like Big Ben) in all the wrong places. On the moon above, a word none of them have ever seen...London.

3. Rachel Musgrave's Disappearance Holmes has retired to a hut in a bamboo grove at the Musgrave estate (a short carriage ride from Arashiyama.) Watson and Moriarty join him, and are shocked to find Mary and Irene there...as well as the medium, Lichborough. The case Holmes never solved...

Watson meets Stanford, who tells him Moriarty's ghost is appearing at seances across the city, insisting he's now in London; this, Watson's stories have been taken as a sign he's joined the spiritualist movement. At Lichborough's trial, she insists this world is but a shadow of the real London.

Fleeing the scene, they discover Holmes missing; Rachel soon arrives, begging for help. Holmes has gone after Moriarty into the East of East Chamber and illusions of the two of them confronting each other are appearing all around the manor. Something has gone very wrong.

Fascinated by this notion, Watson conceives of a world where all the cases his Holmes failed to solve were real; he writes several stories set in this fictitious city of London, and they're published in the Strand only because Irene Adler refuses to let any more of Mary's stories appear there.

This is because Holmes has officially announced his retirement. Irene blames Mary for this, suggesting the entire reason Mary talked her into becoming a detective was to convince Holmes he would never make a comeback. (Indeed, he insists he's moving to the south sea islands.)

2. Irene Adler's Challenge Mrs. Hudson drags Watson to her favorite medium, Mrs. Lichborough. She suggests the cause of Holmes' slump is an old case. While he and Moriarty are out searching for tengu, Watson and Lestrade search his flat, eventually finding the file in the rooftop Benkei shrine.

Holmes warns Irene that if she accepts these events as fact she can no longer call herself a detective (he no longer does.) How can you believe your deductions when you know that magic is real? But she and Mary were there the day Rachel went missing; what they've seen cannot be dismissed.

In the morning Lestrade arrives and arrests Lichborough; Irene's advice led to a Yard investigation. Rachel is spotted outside the window, still 14...but Moriarty is nowhere to be seen. His cane and a note are found in the sealed chamber.

After a chapter pretending this wasn't a mystery novel and then one quietly adding one this time things go full blown supernatural with the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter containing the text of the Musgrave Ritual and a locked chamber in the old wing filled with unearthly sights.

Evidence suggests those that climb the phantom stairs enter a long sleep until a replacement takes over; the man maintaining their ancestral bamboo forests is actually their great uncle, and awoke the day Rachel vanished. Lichborough tries to climb the stairs but is rejected, and succumbs to despair

Item is sort of my version of 'they don't make them like this anymore' in that it's the closest thing in ages to some sort of platonic idea of what anime was supposed to be except it kinda never actually was and half the things that were weren't even good
