Wow, this dog looks friendly! I sure hope it doesn't turn into a zombie and attack me! That would just be the pits! That would be no good! Hotline Miami Mask commission for @leeum2611.bsky.social!

i want more sex toys but do i have sex toy money? no way jose!!! not even close!! thats not even on page 1 of the list of things i need money for!! i think i'll be teaching myself glassblowing in my garage so i can make the buttplugs i require

the cool thing about using reference is that the more you use it (and, the smarter you use it), the less often you need it, and the more you're able to make good use of it. i did not become a good artist until i started treating reference like a tool rather than a concession

Use reference. I’m serious. I get it that somehow you or someone convinced you that using reference is “cheating.” It’s not. You are just hindering yourself.

in college, one class had us look at a model while we drew them... but we had to draw them as if they were turned 90 degrees from the angle we could see. then we rotated around the model and did it again, making 4 drawings this way. now THAT shit will put some wrinkles in your brain.

i think reference is best not as a copying or tracing tool (though those are effective ways to learn too), but as a way of understanding light, color, and form until they become essential building blocks in your brain that you can reassemble into any image you imagine and have it look incredible

drawing is mostly looking. you can't analyze and condense the information of light, form, and color, and then recreate or interpret it in your own art, unless you are doing a lot of looking, looking at the way those things work. that's what reference is for!! drawing is looking!!!!!!

btw what i mean when i talk about using reference smarter: the best way to use reference, imo, is when you're drawing something different than the reference. just extracting raw information from the reference and translating it into what you're imagining. that's where the magic happens
