Talks about Build Soil but this is a private account separate from the nonprofit. The Icon for the account is a hand drawn chestnut wrapped up in a ribbon with the words "Build Soil" on pink
one thing that no one ever seems to talk about - slavers actively sought out African weavers, textile workers and people with sophisticated land management skills- advertisements and mandates were around skilled labor and knowledge
we dont' talk enough about how the planation was a computer system

He instructs the owner to evaluate the overseer's explanations for insufficient production, including illness among enslaved workers and unfavorable weather. He then recommends revising the work assignments and keeping written instructions.
In Chapter 2, Cato tells the owner to calculate work completed, laborers employed, time consumed, crop yields, materials remaining, purchases, and sales.
Meaning: the overseer should frequently settle accounts with the estate owner.
Here is putare, the word from which compute descends, being used directly within the management of an agricultural enterprise employing enslaved workers
Cato actually uses putare in the management of enslaved agricultural labor. he wrote De Agri Cultura, a manual for managing Roman agricultural estates.
In Chapter 5, he instructs the estate overseer:
Rationem cum domino crebro putet.
The word compute descends from a Latin verb that originally meant to clean, trim, or prune, especially agricultural plants. Ancient Roman writers explicitly connected this practice with the reckoning of accounts.

In Chapter 5, Cato specifies that the overseer must supervise enslaved workers, enforce orders, manage loans and supplies, and account regularly to the owner.

We have a Roman agricultural management manual using the linguistic ancestor of compute for calculations that regulate enslaved labor and productive activity.

europe wanted to outcompete the industrial systems of india and china and the they found land capable of supporting rice and cotton and they build computers

And I’ll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it
Then I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin’
But I’ll know my song well before I start singin’
I’m a-goin’ back out ’fore the rain starts a-fallin’
I’ll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison
Where the executioner’s face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, where none is the number
Went extremely well and I can’t post student work without explicit permission, but they were funny and clever, and the class opened up a really big discussion about processing grief and levity and also the fact that people have different vulnerabilities.
So I am teaching a unit of a climate justice class and early in the class we are focused on context of power and safety while approaching difficult topics.
Can everyone send me their favorite Climate memes and jokes that don’t punch don’t punch down?
Anyway, I know that you all do this full-time like I do, but it felt really good to talk with these students about how memeing actually is a professional skill

i'm nervous about it- it could go really wrong. But i also think that it's a way to directly talk about ettiquite and the ways that we consider others and manage our axieties.
because ultimate the class is asking about how power relations cause uneven heterogenious vulnerability and exposure to climate hazards.
and we have to be brave enough to process but also understand what happens when our processing also is part of the perpetuation of oppressions?

there is a line from Gregory Bateson that "Play is the message 'this is safe'" as long as that is truly there, then we can talk about almost everything. But what a lot of people with privallage don't understand is that what's safe for them isn't safe for others. It's not a joke if that isn't assured
So by having them meme or joke we get to explore how to talk about our grief, panic, empathy, fear, anger etc with the aid of humor but also and assessment of why a joke might land poorly.

We are teaching freshman about how to talk about serious issues and beginning after talking about intersectionality, justice, hazards, adaptation/transformation, to do this joke thing.
Originally he wanted the students to "write jokes" and i was like let's expand this to memeing. ad then we had a big talk about how to talk seriously about play and privallage and levity and why both humor AND sensitivity need to be understood as part of justice.

This came from conversations I’ve been having with the faculty for a year on what it is that makes us able to deal with difficult situations largely based on if we do or don’t have the message “this is safe” especially because what’s play for the one person is not necessarily the same for another
i love this teacher I'm TAing for. He's a climate justice guy who has really moved on from institutional change to community engagement. He's provided a place for me to plant Chestnut trees again! it's been about 2 years since i had a place to operate Build Soil from. i'm so excited.

This mirrors my experience almost exactly.
The so-called Left has a moral superiority problem that blocks genuine intersectional militancy.
Solidarity as praxis requires uneasy alliances and the hard work of forging alignments not demanding it from the start.
As I was nearing the end of the first major project of Build Soil, I starting looking for next steps, grants in general were drying up (multiple ecological and community oriented grants were closing down and spending out their capital) and i found myself in a contradiction.
