In the car driving home and triple J played the prodigy which made my millennial heart happy. Wound the windows down and blasted it. Then when I got home and told my partner, he brutally pointed out that that was like listening to the Beatles in the 90's. 💀

Losing my words to sleep deprivation. Just told my partner that my mum "vacuumed the grass with blades" My students are going to have a fun ride deciphering me when I return to teaching next year...

Is anyone here in Brisbane and know of a rental that would suit a family of 4 (incl baby and toddler) and within a 30min bus ride of UQ? We have applied for 10 places now and been rejected for all. Starting to get worried that we won't be able to find a suitable place to live...

My Boomer parents have each independently discovered Substack. I'm now getting a lot of: "Did you see this on Substack?" "Look at this video [clearly AI slop] I found on Substack" "Oh yes, this was mentioned on Substack"

Just heard a hilarious AI story: Apparently a journal used AI to generate the key terms in a recently published linguistics paper and the multiple mentions of the Australian National University's team (i.e. ANU's team) led to the AI identifying the very important key term 'anus'

I think I just saw my 11 y.o. laptop finally die: the screen filled with fine horizontal black lines and then it slowly faded to black. And now it won't turn on. Goodbye ThinkPad e560. I'll never forget our time together watching 100s of hrs of Star Trek and writing my PhD thesis. RIP

Thousands of languages have disappeared throughout human history. New research is shedding light on why. A study coauthored by Yale linguist Claire Bowern finds that widespread language loss began not with European colonialism, but roughly a thousand years earlier.

My 74 year old father is in Cairo and just sent me a video of the incredible view from his hotel roof-top restaurant. I can see the pyramids right there in the background, but instead he zooms in on the building sites and rubbish on the top on neighbouring buildings. 🤦‍♀️

If you're suddenly inundated with clothes moths, they probably came from my place. I just threw out a continent's worth of grubs and moths living in rolled up carpet scraps and a bag of bean-based heat packs 🤢 Working in collections has made me hate moths more than any other insect.

#telstraoutage meant my mum's NSW trainlink *bus* couldn't go(?) So they replaced a bus with a bus(?), but only to Yass station (where the trains weren't running cos of the outage) and so she and 7 others (including small child) stranded at the station with no way to get to their next destinations.

Dunno what happened to the man and little kid at Yass station. He wouldn't've even be able to organise a taxi back to Yass town because in NSW taxis aren't allowed to transport small kids without a car seat. Just a NSW state government & Telstra SNAFU

Almost forgot. The replacement bus hit a low tree branch and got damaged. The driver was instructed to deboard all passengers and return to base immediately which is why he wouldn't take anyone back into Yass town after arriving at the station. Such a nanny state!

Yass station is like 7km outside of town too, surrounded by paddocks. Lousy bus couldn't even drop them off in town where they could at least get food etc. Mum's partner drove over an hour to pick her up and also gave lifts to 3 others.

One guy mum gave a lift to still needed to go further. Went to the train station. Trains still not running and no buses. The stationmaster had to argue with transportNSW to get the guy accommodation in town but couldn't get him money for food SO SHE TOOK OUT HER OWN WALLET AND GAVE HIM SOME CASH.
