Rule 1 of guns, treat every gun as loaded; NO EXCEPTIONS. Rule 2 of guns, look beyond the target for any unintended damage it can inflict. Rule 3 of guns, if you can't be certain of the shot, DON'T TAKE IT. At the very least, an armed "professional" should have been trained in these three rules.
