I actually have important contributions to the Cheesecake Factory discourse. My first job in Washington was actually as a Cheesecake Factory server and bartender. One day in 2009 or 2010 I wandered in for my shift a bit early...

Anyway, I can personally vouch for the fact that at least some members of the Obama family are familiar with and seemingly fans of the Cheesecake Factory.

Also, the D.C. Cheesecake Factory-to-National Media pipline is real, having produced me, Ashley Parker of the Atlantic and Lynsea Garrison of the NYT. Kids, go wait tables or sling drinks at a bar for a summer or a year. It's a great bit of life experience with transferable skills. Not even kidding.

My friend Nicolette was at the POS computer and I wandered up to say hi. She said "turn around." Behind me were Malia and Sasha Obama and their grandmother Marian Robinson and some USSS officers trying to look inconspicuous. That was not the first and only time they visited.

A look into the kind of pressure tactics DHS is using against travelers to get them to open their devices at border crossings: officials lied to a man, saying they wanted to search his phone for "kiddie porn" when they were investigating him for "terrorism," docs show www.404media.co/dhs-said-the...

404media.coDHS Said They Searched Man Who Wiped GrapheneOS Phone for Child Abuse Material. They LiedOfficials said they wanted to search the phone of Samuel Tunick, a Stop Cop City activist, for child abuse material. It was actually because he was suspected of “terrorist activities.”

Also, this is the second major setback in recent weeks for highway interdiction programs that seek to detain Americans based police suspicions of their travel patterns. See this case in Texas from last month: reason.com/2026/09/30/c...

reason.comCops used AI surveillance to detain an innocent Texas driver. His lawsuit just got the program struck down.Officers made up reasons to pull over and interrogate Alek Schott, and they faked a K-9 alert to justify a nonconsensual search.

If you want to see the hollowness of the modern internet in action, behold this book club scammer's AI agent pitching me using poorly scraped or stolen data thinking that I'm "Christopher Byron," who himself is an "author" writing AI generated ebook slop on Amazon. Great use of tokens, everyone.

Really important @josephcox.bsky.social story that adds a huge amount of detail about the domestic intelligence program the U.S. Border Patrol is running, where it secretly singles out U.S. citizens and then refers them to local police officers for a pretextual stop if they appear suspicious.

This was such a good read, I knew about metadata but this terrified me. And then angered me that nothing has been done to protect American citizens.
