wild story from @jjoffeblock.bsky.social: a NY woman posted about the Minneapolis immigration surge back in January. Five months later, DHS officials showed up telling her to take a post down, saying she had doxxed an ICE agent -- by citing a newspaper reporting his name www.npr.org/2026/06/26/n...

Congress knows that AI is too big to ignore, but lawmakers have yet to agree on the federal government's role in the industry. The big companies are spending to shape policy — and Congress — ahead of whatever legislation eventually comes. --- new @byshannonbond.com and me

I've reported on Musk for around 8 years. I've co-authored a book on him. I don't think folks understand the rate of his wealth accumulation. Shortly after he helped elect Donald Trump in Nov 2024, his net worth was around $350 billion. That net worth has nearly tripled in less than two years.

On the biggest Kalshi market over who would eventually become mayor of LA, traders bet $60M for and against Pratt. $10M of that was thrown away betting he’d advance to runoff and win. $50M of that were bets that he would never be mayor. Kalshi pocketed $547k in fees just on Pratt trading

But the bottom line is, there's no need for China to influence anything. A recent Gallup poll found that 71% of Americans would oppose AI data center construction in their community. And unlike a lot of issues in this country right now, the Partisan split isn't even all that great.

OpenAI says this campaign didn't get much traction. "I do want to be really clear here: This was not a case of an influence operation creating a debate. The debate existed already. This was an influence operation from China trying to interfere in it," lead investigator Ben Nimmo told reporters.

but...that's not to say China isn't trying to influence the data center debate. OpenAI just banned some China-linked accounts for using ChatGPT to try to fan online opposition. They posed as Americans and posted AI-gen comments and pics about rising electricity costs. openai.com/index/prc-li...

I'll be less polite then Geoff or Nell. Deciding to give Nell Greenfieldboyce "the ol' heave ho" (her words) is absurd and self-defeating. She's a reason to listen to the radio. Which is something NPR should treasure! It's a rare gift!

Geoff Brumfiel@gbrumfiel.bsky.social

And now that it's published, I can say that @ngreenfieldboyce.bsky.social is going to be so missed by all of us here. She is truly one of a kind, and her exit interview shows just that.

it's a crushing day at NPR. we're losing some people i've been listening to since before i ever dreamed i'd do radio myself. it's a blow to NPR and i fear to journalism.

Danielle Kurtzleben@titonka.bsky.social

Gutted to be losing people like Nell Greenfieldboyce, Joe Shapiro, and Don Gonyea -- all of whom I count as friends and also simply unparalleled journalists. This business, man. It's the literal worst sometimes. www.npr.org/2026/05/27/n...

I wrote about Dianna Russini, the constant pressure female reporters face to prove they aren't sleeping with sources (plus the pressure we do get from sources to get involved with them), and why all of this is so uncomfortable to talk about. Gift link:

“Key historical records about the incident during the Reagan administration, known as the Able Archer 83 War Scare, were removed without explanation.“ This was the war game that nearly started WWIII during my first semester of college. It took years for us to find out about it. Now it’s gone.

I don't need a summary of what's available online, in biographies, or even in my own notes. I need to comb through and find the great details, decide what interests ME. No, it's not efficient. It's slow and painstaking. But I don't believe in efficiency as an ultimate good, especially in writing. /

Adam means that she is the daughter of immigrants, but it is worth emphasizing that *every* U.S. citizen who has not been naturalized is a birthright citizen, either by the 14th Amendment or by statute.

i didn't realize until watching it with my kid today how much capacity i still have to be excited about human ingenuity. space is cool, and we shouldn't let the billionaires take that sense of wonder from us.
