No Nembhard vs. Milwaukee. Wrote about how important it's been for the Pacers to play with two point guards at once. That's been more difficult without McConnell. It'll be even more difficult tonight on the second night of a back-to-back without Nembhard.

Caitlin Cooper@caitlinmaycooper.bsky.social

Wrote about how, despite the increased need to stagger Tyrese & Nembhard, IND's two starting PGs are still better (and getting better) together On Nembhard-Tyrese nail "screens," & why the Nets responded in a way, doubling Nembhard, I've never seen: www.patreon.com/basketballsh...

On the need for more split decisions without T.J. McConnell, and how an EOQ action typically reserved for McConnell revealed why Haliburton and Nembhard are still "nailing" their minutes in tandem. My column, on why playing more PGs is still more for IND: www.patreon.com/basketballsh...

From a "someone made a *huge* shot to cut the lead to 18" home opener -- a running blog about what I noticed from Walker and Oubre, and why both need to start demonstrating more of an edge, especially in maintaining the edge of the defense. My column: www.patreon.com/basketballsh...

Wish creative labor would stop being treated like a free vending machine or readily available food recipe. Using the same ingredients ignores the time and mental energy that goes into crafting the recipe in the first place.

Think that closing space with the next nearest defender behind penetration like this could start to replace switch-to-blitz as a means of protecting bigs in isolation -- at least against score-first drivers. Teams are better at attacking 4v3 and this takes away the reattack.

For clarity, if there's a drive to the left block, the player at the right wing completely leaves their man to go double from behind, eliminating any opportunities for changes in direction if the drive is cut off by the sagging big.

Smart hack from NOP for generating OREB: Driving the double side of the floor with the opposite dunker spot filled and the shooter placed at the wing/45. When the big rotates over on the drive, the crack back rotation from the wing defender is nearly impossible.

For nearly a five-minute stretch to start the 2Q, the Pacers were held scoreless. For nearly a four-minute stretch to close the game, the Pacers were basically unstoppable -- playing repeatedly out of the same alignment. My column, on the how and why of what differentiated those two stretches.

I wrote about Pascal Siakam setting 15 ball-screens in the 4Q, compared to 13 for the rest of the game. On spamming the Tyrese-Siakam 2-man game that changed the game for the Pacers, w/ both stars stepping up big while the defense didn't step up from Zubac: www.patreon.com/basketballsh...

For a team that's ranked 27th in PnR frequency with a spacer in the dunker over the last two seasons, on the significance of spacing a big to mirror Haliburton and not letting the game get away in what was Haliburton's emotional return to the game: www.patreon.com/basketballsh...

Sharing today's pod with @caitlinmaycooper.bsky.social again, previewing the Pacers season. Competitive basketball is back. Haliburton, Zubac, the changes coming. Also, win predictions. How to play with pace with a non-shooting big trailing: Flare the top defender loading up toward the ball & make it difficult for the defenders behind the flare to stunt at the shooter w/o opening up a corner 3PA. Also, jumbo lineup of Siakam-Obi-Zu creates mismatch for Siakam.

This hasn’t been mentioned much about the Siakam-Zu pairing, but Zu is going to be a five defended by 5s. Which means, unlike in seasons past, Siakam is going to have mismatches a lot more often rather than dealing with center cross-matches.

The Pacers have ranked bottom-5 in paint points allowed each of the last two seasons. They've surged to 4th in preseason, featuring a lot more gap help. Siakam/Nembhard nail presence. Oubre pulled in as low-man. Zu weak-hand contest. Ball didn't touch the paint until 3-sec mark

More numbers: - 4th at limiting OPP PITP - 1st at limiting OPP OREB% - 3rd-lowest average of OPP shots attempted in the restricted area per 100 possessions (up from 29th during the 2024-25 regular season) Shift to take away the rim instead of threes

This preseason game also saw him receive his 3rd-highest screen contact% for the Pacers among the 256 games in which he's logged at least 15 picks. More, on my takeaways from him taking a different way -- and injury as the potential mother of invention www.patreon.com/basketballsh...

"The Green" happened tonight. Zubac spaced out to the corner for the rifle concept. Skip pass into uphill hand-off.

When Rick Carlisle was on Draymond Green's podcast, he said, "we've actually named a new element of our offense after you. We call it 'Green.' If I had to guess, it's this rifle concept that I wrote about last week and talked about below -- along w/ a few other GSW things.

Thought this looked familiar. RAM-Elbow-Split-Exit. 2-man action out of RAM series for the big to flash to the elbow. Flows into split action with an exit screen to open space at the nail for the short-roll. Turnover here, but this is the same play the Pacers opened games with for Sabonis.
