Great article from Chicago Review of Books about the sudden sale and impending closure of Catapult Books and the great loss to the reading public. "And for the love of god, never trust a billionaire."

Chicago Review of Books@chicagorevbooks.bsky.social

"I just know our review exists to celebrate literature and writers, and I’d like their art to last." Read @mbwwelch.bsky.social on the Catapult books sale and the age of damnation for American publishing below. chireviewofbooks.com/2026/10/27/t...

I'm reading Island of the Bird-Folk by Kiyoko Murata; translated by Juliet Winters Carpenter. Set on an island off the coast of Japan, populated by older women who are keeping the mainland safe from invaders, but their real goal is to become birds. Out in January from @catapultbooks.bsky.social.

Part memoir and part history of the postcard Notes on Postcards by Jennifer Croft is a deeply intimate reflection of loss, love, family, and hope. Croft also shares her enthusiasm for antique postcards and the messages written on them. I love this book! One of my favorites of 2026!

"It comes to me like any other video on WhatsApp, from my best friend Nimmi and with the words forwarded many times italicized at the top." I'm reading Fieldwork as a Sex Object by Meena Kandasamy. A young woman wakes up and discovers she's the victim of a deepfake porno. Out 11.24 from Soft Skull

Yes, I’m well aware that Catapult is set to shut down operations on October 30. I’m simply trying to highlight books currently scheduled to come out later this year and into early 2027. My heart goes out to the employees and authors caught in a wealthy person’s madness.

I'm always thrilled when one of my quotes is featured in the Indie Next flyer and I've had more of my favorite @catapultbooks.bsky.social titles selected than any other publishers. Earlier this year both Plastic and Body Double were included and they are two books I keep thinking about.

Congratulations to Irene Solà and Mara Faye Lethem! One of my favorite books!

We're excited to announce the winner of the 2026 National Translation Award in Prose: I GAVE YOU EYES AND YOU LOOKED TOWARD DARKNESS by Irene Solà, translated from Catalan by Mara Faye Lethem, published by Graywolf Press!

Set in 1870s in Utica, New York The Loomis family rule the city through hustles and cons. Hilarious cinematic writing and newspaper headlines bring this book to life. The Losing Team by debut fiction author Evan Calder Williams is a masterpiece! Out in March 2027 from @riverheadbooks.bsky.social.

I've been reading stacks of early 2027 releases. Today's read is Intention by Johannes Lichtman. Written in altering voices between Noah a young American journalist and Birgitta a mystery writer. Intention is a tautly written, tension building drama. I'm loving this book! @doubledaybooks.bsky.social

When reading one book turns into reading two other books. In One Brief Moment All Eternity by Elif Shafak gives a voice to the women both real and fictional in Gustave Flaubert's life. I last read Madame Bovary when I was a teen.

"In the beginning, we lived by the seasons, by the river, by the wood." A woman and her partner retreat to a gamekeeper's cottage in the woods. She's newly pregnant and he's called away to Norway. Landing in March from @transitbooks.bsky.social Poor Baby by Sarah Bernstein is a stunner.

The Cercador Prize is one of my favorites! Excellent list and judged by booksellers. This bookseller would love to be a Cercador Prize judge.

Joel Pinckney@jpinckney.bsky.social

The Cercador Prize is a bookseller-judged prize for literature in translation that regularly has one of the most interesting, diverse lists of books of any award list anywhere. They just launched a fundraiser with some truly delicious merch. Support these folks!

The 2027 galleys keep arriving! Today's excellent book mail! Burn and Rave by Max Porter and The Corpses We Planted by Lina Wolff; translated by Frank Perry
